Ashamed of Shell

COMMENT FROM A FORMER SHELL EMPLOYEE (Name and contact information supplied).

I was reading your blog today about Shell’s annual meeting and the dissatisfaction being expressed by shareholders. One shareholder I think summed up the attitude of most shareholders in general, and employees in particular (who are also shareholders in Shell through the various stock purchase plans). The comment about the conduct of corporate management was – ‘… I don’t want to be ashamed (of the way the company was conducting itself) ….’.

Well, I think that shareholders have a good deal to be ashamed of, whether it is the (mis)conduct of the company in Nigeria (oil exploitation), corporate (mis)conduct in the States and South America (pesticide production and pollution), corporate (mis)conduct with regard to the IP rights of partners, contractors, etc., and the defrauding of investors, etc., through the cooking of the ‘reserve books’, and so on. Shareholders should even be ashamed of the company’s past affiliation with the Nazis and Shell’s refusal to come clean on that matter. read more

Shell unable to insure risk of Arctic drilling?

EMAIL SENT TO ROYAL DUTCH SHELL PLC COMPANY SECRETARY MICHIEL BRANDJES BY JOHN DONOVAN

From: John Donovan <[email protected]>
Subject: AGM
Date: 22 May 2012 23:36:40 GMT+01:00
To: [email protected]

Dear Mr Brandjes

I would like to verify two answers given by the Shell board during the AGM held today.

SELF-INSURING THE ARCTIC DRILLING RISK

Did I hear correctly that Shell has been unable to obtain contingent insurance from Lloyd’s of London against a major disaster arising from your pending Arctic drilling project, and that instead, Shell is going to self-insure? This means Shell shareholders will run the risk of the company being potentially made bankrupt, as very nearly happened to BP due to the Macondo disaster.  I am astonished that this situation, if I correctly understood what was stated, has not been picked up by the news media.  It means that the risk is deemed so dire by  Lloyds’ underwriters that they will not insure the risk at any cost. In this regard, the risks involved in Arctic drilling are obviously potentially far greater than drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. read more

Shell under fire over Arctic plans and pay

Michael Kavanagh: Financial Times

22 May 2012

Environmental campaigners and shareholders clashed with Royal Dutch Shell at an annual meeting dominated by concerns over exploration in Alaska, slow progress tackling oil leakages in Nigeria, dividend policy and executive pay.

Shell, which faced criticism from retail investors at the meeting over pay increases for top executives, said 9 per cent of its shareholders voted against its remuneration report.

In March, it revealed that its chief executive Peter Voser took home €11.7-million last year, more than doubled his pay in the previous 12 months, after lucrative long-term incentive plans paid out. read more

Shareholders shake Shell with pay vote

23 May 2012

Shell became the latest company to receive a bloody nose yesterday, as more than a tenth of the oil giant’s investors failed to approve the pay awards of its top-level executives.

Despite Shell reporting a 54 per cent jump in profits last year, just over 9 per cent of investors voted against the pay award for chief executive Peter Voser, which more than doubled over the period. Including abstentions, 11 per cent of shareholders failed to back Shell’s remuneration report, which also included a €2.52m (£2m) severance payment for Malcolm Brinded, who stepped down as head of exploration and production in April. read more

Shell Will Take Cue From Nigeria On UN Report

LONDON (Dow Jones)–Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) “hopes to hear soon” from Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on how recommendations from a United Nations report into long-standing pollution in the Niger Delta should be implemented, Chief Executive Peter Voser told shareholders Tuesday.

The 2011 report, which was funded by Shell, documented fifty years of oil contamination in the Delta region of Ogoniland. It concluded that stakeholders–including Shell and other oil companies, as well as the Nigerian government–should commit at least $1 billion to funding new institutions that oversee the clean-up and rehabilitation of the affected areas. read more

Shell Shunned as Cove Prefers PTT

May 23, 2012

By ALEXIS FLYNN And ORANAN PAWEEWUN

LONDON—The race to secure access to East Africa’s natural-gas fields took a twist Wednesday after Thai state firm PTT Exploration & Production PCL PTTEP.TH -6.19% trumped Royal Dutch Shell RDSA -0.11% PLC’s offer for Mozambique-focused explorer Cove Energy COV.LN +11.24% PLC with a late $1.9 billion bid.

And in a sudden about-face Cove’s board, which only this week had recommended Shell’s offer to its shareholders, said it now advised investors to accept PTTEP’s 240 pence a share bid, which is 9.1% higher than Shell had offered last month and represents a 6.6% premium to Cove’s average closing price over the five business days ended May 22. read more

Shell Tox

COMMENT BY A FORMER EMPLOYEE OF SHELL OIL COMPANY

John,

A short time ago you ran a series of articles on Shell’s chemical contribution to the chemical industry’s ‘war on ‘bugs’ and to a brighter future for all mankind. After Shell’s family of three ‘-drins’ was banned (because of cancer and other types of health risks) in the US in the mid-1970’s, it turned out something like 96% of all Americans had these chemicals in their bodies at that time.

Shell immediately moved production of those wonder chemicals to South America. These ‘-drin’ products of Shell have even made the ‘Dirty Dozen’ list of banned substances. read more

Shell Remains Committed To Natural Gas Strategy – CEO Voser

May 22, 2012

LONDON (Dow Jones)–Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB) believes rising natural gas demand will underpin its future profits, even though oil pricing still accounts for 80% of its margins, its Chief Executive Peter Voser said Tuesday.

The oil giant, which expects to produce more natural gas than crude oil for the first time this year, has invested heavily in gas assets in the U.S. and Australia. However, U.S. gas prices have fallen to decade-lows as new production techniques have resulted in a glut of supply from shale rock sources. read more

Shell Executive Pay Rejected By Nearly 10% Of Investors

Published May 22, 2012 Dow Jones Newswires

LONDON –  Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB.LN) shareholders showed their ire over high executive pay with nearly 10% of investors rejecting the company’s remuneration report at Shell’s annual general meeting Tuesday.

Just over 90% of Shell shareholders approved the company’s pay package following an assembly in which several investors gave a withering assessment of current rates of executive remuneration.

Martin Simons, who said he has been a Shell shareholder for 50 years, bemoaned the Anglo-Dutch firm’s top managers getting a 59% pay rise at a time when dividends have remained static. Executive Pay

In the Oil & Gas sector we know that today’s decisions usually impact on results  several years out into the future.  I see todays Shell results largely attributable to decisions made by Jeroen van der Veer and Linda Cook on Sakhalin and Qatar.  They had the determination and vision to play the long game and take Shell to where it is now.  It is upsetting to see the current management team claiming credit and excessive financial rewards off the efforts of others.  Today’s team gets top marks for spin but the jury is still out on their business performance.   read more

Nigeria: Fishermen Groan As Shell’s Dispersants Cause Damage

Shell CEO Peter Voser ignores plea from poisoned former employees

By John Donovan

Printed below is an email sent to RDS CEO Mr Peter Voser on 4 May 2012 by a former Shell employee representing former workers at a Shell/Basf Chemicals factory in Brazil.

The factory was built in 1977 by Shell. Dozens of former employees of the plant have been diagnosed with prostate, thyroid and other types of cancer, circulatory, liver and intestinal illnesses, as well as infertility and sexual impotence.

In August 2010, the two companies were ordered to pay a total of 490 million euros in fines and damages for the workers exposure to toxic substances. The defendant companies have appealed to successively higher courts, initially trying to get the verdict overturned and after that failed, seeking to have the awarded sum reduced.  This process is dragging on with no end in sight. read more

The typical OSHA fine for a work-related death is about $7,900. “There’s no question in my mind that higher penalties would encourage employers to eliminate hazards before workers are hurt,” says David Michaels, the assistant secretary of labor for occupational safety and health. “I think all of us recognize that fear of prison focuses the mind.”

UK Government faces tough questions after intervention to aid Shell in US court case on human rights abuses in Niger Delta

Posted: 21 May 2012

UK Government is facing a series of difficult questions after it surfaced that it has chosen to intervene on behalf of Royal Dutch Shell in a major US court case brought against the oil giant by Nigerian villagers.

Kiobel v Shell is the latest incarnation of a long-running legal battle fought by communities in the Niger Delta, who claim that Shell is responsible for serious human rights abuses and environmental damage in the region.

Over 2,000 oil spills have been reported in the Niger Delta, which, according to Amnesty International, have devastated the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of people. Yet, the companies responsible, which include Shell, have to date failed to adequately compensate those affected. read more

Shell’s pay plans are ‘excessive’

Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell is set to suffer a backlash from shareholders over executive pay, including a £9.4 million package for its boss.

Chief executive Peter Voser took home 11.7 million euros last year – more than double the amount he earned in 2010 – after lucrative long-term incentive plans paid out.

20 May 2012

He earned 5.2 million euros (£4.2 million) in annual salary and bonus awards, which was slightly down on the previous year, but his total pay was boosted by 6.5 million euros (£5.2 million) from long-term rewards plans.

Shareholder body Pirc advised clients to vote against the company’s remuneration report at its annual meeting on Tuesday after branding its pay “excessive”.

Although salaries have effectively been frozen since 2009, it said they are still at the high end of its UK peer group and will see increases of between 3% and 5% in 2012. read more

Another alleged case of IP theft hits Royal Dutch Shell

I have a short comment about the company you clearly enjoy tormenting.

Over the years RDS managers (not all, but a large percentage) have made it abundantly clear what type of people they are.

Whilst trawling through cases filed against Shell on the U.S. Court system electronic records, I came across a claim filed on 17 April 2012.

Our own problems with Shell arose from the serial theft of ideas we disclosed to the company in strictest confidence. We had to sue four times over a period of several years. The Gripe Site – Royal Dutch Shell vs. Robert Eringer

by LloydBricks May 17, 2012

One consequence of global anger about widespread banking fraud, corruption, and environmental devastation as of late has been the creation of the online ‘gripe site’ such as those by author, blogger and self-proclaimed ‘intelligence adviser’ Robert Eringer, along with the more popular site of Royal Dutch Shell. These are websites dedicated to exposing what their writers see as unfair, illegal or corrupt behaviour by individuals or companies.

Comparing the sites, Robert Eringer’s primary website could not be more different from royaldutchshellplc.com—one of the most well known of such sites. The numerous websites of Robert Eringer are a clear piece of self- promotion; alongside the half-baked conspiracy theories and wild claims of Eringer’s own personal involvement with powerful people are links to purchase his books. These include memoirs, spy thrillers and non-fiction books. All appear to have been self-published and not very well-received. read more

JERSEY CITY, N.J. — 7-Eleven Inc. continues to pull away from the pack as the U.S. convenience industry’s largest chain by number of stores. In the past year, the Dallas-based division of Japanese c-store giant Seven & i Holdings Co. widened its store count lead over Big Oil companies Shell Oil Products US, BP plc and Chevron Corp., and even Canada-based c-store giant, Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., which operates the Circle K brand in the United States.

While the industry remains highly fragmented, the Convenience Store News’ Top 100 convenience store chains added approximately 1,700 net new stores in the past year, a 3-percent increase to 59,434 stores. Shell: Liquid Shales Could Have Big Impact On Energy Mix

May 17,2012

LONDON -(Dow Jones)- Shale rock formations that contain liquid hydrocarbons as well as natural gas could have a ” significant” impact on world energy supplies but it is too early to say for sure, a senior Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSB) executive said Thursday.

“It is too early to predict the impact if liquid rich shales. It could be significant,” said Ruth Cairnie, Shell executive vice president for strategy and planning. read more

Shell starts repair work in Nigeria

LAGOS, Nigeria, May 17 (UPI) — A Shell subsidiary in Nigeria announced it started repairs on a crude oil pipeline in the country following an early May closure and force majeure declaration.

Shell declared force majeure on Bonny Light crude, the Nigerian blend, as of May 4.

“The action is due to production deferment caused by incessant crude theft and illegal bunkering on Nembe Creek Trunkline,” the company said in a statement.

The shutdown means 60,000 barrels of oil per day is deferred while repairs take place. read more

Gas discovery for Cove may rock boat for Shell

The Irish Times – Wednesday, May 16, 2012

BARRY O’HALLORAN and CIARA O’BRIEN

EXPLORATION GROUP Cove Energy yesterday reported a new gas find off Mozambique, raising speculation that a new bidder could attempt to trump an existing $1.8 billion offer from Shell for the company.

Cove said Anadarko, its partner in the Rovuma licence off the east African country, had between seven trillion and 20 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas in the Golfinho exploration well where one of its partners had been drilling. read more

Shell millions tied to study

May 16, 2012 – 8:04pm By JOANN ALBERSTAT Business Reporter

Geologist: Analysis spurred energy giant’s N.S. program

A $15-million government-funded study on Nova Scotia’s offshore oil and gas potential helped spur Shell’s $1-billion exploration program here, a Houston-based chief geologist with the global energy giant said Wednesday in Halifax.

Brad Prather, who works in deepwater exploration for the company’s Upstream Americas division, told a renewable energy research and development forum that the study played an important role in the super major’s decision to start looking for oil and gas here again. read more

Groups appeal air permit for Shell Arctic drilling

by Dan Joling / Associated Press: May 16, 2012

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Environmental and Alaska Native groups on Wednesday appealed an air permit granted by the Environmental Protection Agency to a Shell Oil drilling ship that could be used this summer in the Arctic Ocean off Alaska’s northern shore.

The groups claim the Kulluk and support vessels will put harmful pollutants into the skies, adding problems to a region already beset by climate warming, and that the EPA granted the permit without consideration of all national environmental laws and regulations.

“EPA did not analyze whether the Kulluk will comply with all standards, and they relied on modeling tricks to reduce the measured impact.” Earthjustice attorney Colin O’Brien said. read more

By Nina Dos Santos, CNN

May 16, 2012

With a staff of more than 90,000 to consider and operations in more than 80 countries to oversee, Shell CEO Peter Voser has admitted that he must plan for what the markets say is an increasingly plausible outcome to a tragedy well into its third year.

Speaking on CNN’s “World Business Today,” Voser said that “one obviously has made provisions” at this stage.

“I still see it as a low likelihood scenario, but we have done our work over the last few months to prepare ourselves,” he said. read more

‘Inside job’ as Peru eyes gas in uncontacted tribes’ land

In the early 1980s, Shell workers opened up paths into the uncontacted Nahua Indians’ land. Diseases soon wiped out half the tribe.

Secret plans reveal Peru is actively pursuing new gas reserves inside protected tribal land, a flagrant violation of laws that prevent such projects.

The Nahua-Nanti Reserve in southeast Peru is known for its uncontacted Amazon tribes, but more controversially, for a wide stretch of gas fields called the Camisea project.

Only last month, despite 75% of one gas block already dominating the reserve, Peru’s Ministry of Mines and Energy gave the Camisea consortium the green light for more gas exploration. read more

May 16, 2012

By MARI IWATA

TOKYO—Energy companies from China, South Korea and Japan have put aside political and commercial rivalries to ship billions of dollars worth of Canadian liquefied natural gas to Asian markets, but they will face stiff competition for supplies and customers from a raft of competing projects.

In a landmark agreement, Mitsubishi Corp., 8058.TO -0.49% Korea Gas Corp. and PetroChina Co. 0857.HK -3.80% late Wednesday said they and Royal Dutch Shell RDSA +0.66% PLC would go ahead with a “LNG Canada” project to pipe gas to the Pacific Coast, where it will be deep-chilled and exported by sea. read more

Delaware flexes legal muscle in a 2001 death at a refinery owned by Houston oil outfit

By LISE OLSEN

Only Shell and its refining companies came close to BP’s death toll for the decade. Shell Oil Products, predecessor Equilon Enterprises and sister company Motiva Enterprises together recorded 11 deaths.

Federal law allows prosecutors to go after employers whose willful violation of workplace safety leads to a death — but it almost never happens.

There have been no federal criminal prosecutions of employers for homicide in workplace deaths under that law in at least a decade in Texas. read more

Shell Arctic oil spill sniffer dogs: is this a late April Fools joke?

Trained sniffer dogs at work…

COMMENT BY A FORMER EMPLOYEE OF SHELL OIL COMPANY

John,

I read your latest blog regarding the proposed use of dogs by Shell to sniff-out oil spills in the Arctic.

Surely, someone has got to be acting in jest. Please tell me that Shell and DOI have more effective spill detection technology and a better plan than this. Please tell me that the fate of that very fragile Arctic marine ecosystem is not being abandoned by Federal regulatory agencies and is not being left to ‘go to the dogs’, so to speak. Please tell me that Shell has something better than this to offer. Please tell me that this is a late April Fools joke and not being seriously considered. read more
