Total Elgin/Franklin toxic blowout

13 APRIL 2012

John

Just received this pic from the Elgin-Franklin blowout.

The yellow stuff presumably is sulfur. Not nice stuff.

Blow-out is at the cellar deck from a surface Xmastree.

No idea how sour (H2S content) the gas is, but realise that 1000 ppm (= 0.1%) means instant death.

It is as poisonous or even slightly worse than hydrogen cyanide, the stuff in detective….

Very difficult to approach without full protection gear.

I am glad I am not in the shoes of the Total engineers and management. read more

A Tale of Two Oil Slicks

April 13, 2012

By Alexis Flynn

On Thursday, Royal Dutch Shell announced it was investigating a potential leak in the Gulf of Mexico. On the same day, it reported a more than sevenfold increase in the amount of crude spilled over the last year in Nigeria, one of its major host countries. But only one of these events is believed to be the catalyst for investor fright.

Royal Dutch Shell shares fell around 5% at one stage Thursday after the Anglo-Dutch oil giant said it was taking a closer look at an oil sheen near two of its offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Later its shares rose and reversed most of the day’s losses after the company said the sheen didn’t stem from its two nearby platforms, and that the amount of oil was small. read more

Royal Dutch Shell is still a client of Hakluyt & Company

By John Donovan

I have received confirmation this afternoon from a reliable source that Shell remains a client of Hakluyt & Company.

Shell’s close association with the spy firm, said to be heavily populated by current/former MI6 officers including the former Head of Shell Global Security, Ian Forbes McCredie OBE, stretches back over a decade.

Titled Shell directors were directors and major shareholders in Hakluyt. Sir William Purves was Chairman of Hakluyt & Company Limited. Sir Peter Holmes (now deceased) was President of The Hakluyt Foundation, which supposedly fulfilled an oversight function. read more

Shell’s Nigerian oil spills soar

Shell is facing the prospect of an embarrassing litigation in London, from Nigerian villagers affected by oil spills in 2008, after talks on a settlement broke down last month…

By Tom Bergin: LONDON, April 12 | Thu Apr 12, 2012 2:07pm EDT

(Reuters) – Royal Dutch Shell Plc said on Thursday that oil spills at its facilities in Nigeria soared last year, as it faces lawsuits in the UK regarding earlier spills.

Shell said in its annual Sustainability Report that the number of operational spills onshore increased to 63 in 2011, from 32 in 2010.

The volume of operational spills jumped to 5,300 tonnes from 700 tonnes in 2010, largely due to a leak at its offshore Bonga facility. read more

Royal Dutch Shell PLC says its operational oil spills nearly doubled last year in Nigeria

By Associated Press, Updated: Thursday, April 12, 8:13 PM

LAGOS, Nigeria — Royal Dutch Shell PLC says the number of its operational oil spills nearly doubled last year.

Shell made the statement Thursday in its annual sustainability report, saying it had 63 operational spills in 2011. That’s compared to 32 spills in 2010.

Shell blamed them on restarting pipelines it hadn’t run in some time in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta over fears of militancy. Shell also said spills came from increasing thefts along its pipelines in the region.

Shell said it spilled 5,300 tons of oil in 2011. The company blamed the majority of that on a spill at its Bonga offshore oil facility in December. By comparison, the company said it spilled nearly 14,000 tons in 2009. read more

The Coming Boom in Arctic Drilling

By Aimee Duffy: April 10, 2012

Technology is changing the oil exploration and production picture, and one of the biggest impacts will be on Arctic drilling. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that 25% of the world’s remaining undiscovered conventional oil and gas reserves are located in the Arctic, with most of it in offshore reservoirs. The U.S. lays claim to about a third of those reserves, an excellent position to be in as more high Arctic licenses are granted to exploration and production companies. read more

Shell forest to offset oilsands footprint

Shell Canada will buy 740 hectares of private land north of Grande Prairie in a venture with the Alberta Conservation Association (ACA), the oil giant announced Monday.

With a mix of woodlands, grasslands and wetlands along the Ksituan River, the site – now called the Shell True North Forest – is near the town of Spirit River, less than a kilometre south of Moonshine Provincial Park.

Previously used for grazing cattle and hay production, the land will be jointly managed to conserve biodiversity while allowing low-impact recreation, such as hiking and bird watching, the oil giant said in a news release. read more

In Total North Sea gas leak, comparisons to Gulf oil spill inevitable

By Associated Press, Updated: Monday, April 9, 3:38 PM

PARIS — Oil giant Total has moved to reassure investors and environmental activists over the past week that the financial and environmental damage from its gas leak in the North Sea would be limited, a task made more difficult by comparisons to BP’s handling of a catastrophic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico nearly two years ago. Initial data showed that the leak from Total’s platform in the Elgin gas field 150 miles (250 kilometers) off the coast of Scotland — which was first detected March 25 — was pouring out about 7 million cubic feet (200,000 cubic meters) of natural gas each day. On Friday, the company said the rate of the leak appeared to have slowed but had no new figure.

In a conference call to analysts and reporters last week, Total Chief Financial Officer Patrick de La Chevardiere appealed to those listening to avoid comparisons between the Elgin leak and the Gulf spill at BP’s Macondo well.

“While we understand that comparisons to Macondo are inevitable, we would like to state clearly that the situations are very different,” he said. “There is no crude oil involved here and therefore the current impact on and risks for the environment are relatively low.” read more

North Sea spills on the rise

Professor Andrew Watterson, the head of the occupational and environmental health research group at the University of Stirling, accused companies of playing down “the potentially catastrophic consequences” of gas and oil leaks. “

Karrie Gillett: MONDAY 09 2012

Sixty-nine oil and chemical spills in the North Sea have been reported in three months. Eighteen companies were named in a table published by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. The most recent incident was a gas leak at Total’s Elgin platform on 25 March.

Professor Andrew Watterson, the head of the occupational and environmental health research group at the University of Stirling, accused companies of playing down “the potentially catastrophic consequences” of gas and oil leaks. “These are very worrying figures that cannot be slicked over by government agencies and industry,” he said. He blamed “corporate failures” for polluting the sea, and pointed out that the number of reported chemical leaks had more than doubled since 2005. read more

Elgin Leak

COMMENT BY A NORTH SEA PLATFORM EXPLORATION AND PRODUCTION EXPERT

John,

Something is very strange about the Elgin well head platform and the subsequent leak.  The media has made so much speculation that has little or no technical sense whatsoever.  The attached is a scan of the wellhead itself as published in the Aberdeen Press and journal on Saturday.

What you can see is the well casing and small holes in that casing, where gas and lots of what looks like wax, can be seen on the surrounding area.  I have not seen the well construction data but clearly the holes are part of the original design but exactly what function they have and for what purpose is only known to the in-house Total Engineers. read more

Iran halts Greek oil sales, may cut Shell supply

Iran has stopped shipping oil to Greece and may halt supplies to Royal Dutch Shell PLC over unpaid bills…

April 6, 2012, 8:30 a.m. EDT

By Benoit Faucon

LONDON -(MarketWatch)- Iran has stopped shipping oil to Greece and may halt supplies to Royal Dutch Shell PLC over unpaid bills, Iran media said Friday, as the impact of sanctions widens.

The news suggests a decline in Iranian oil exports last month may accelerate as banking sanctions add to an upcoming European ban on Tehran oil. That could lead to upward pressure on oil prices, which have recently surged to a four-year high.

The Mehr news agency said that, due to unpaid bills, Iran stopped deliveries to Greek refiners Hellenic Petroleum and Motor Oil. Greece has long been the European Union country relying the most on Iranian oil–sometimes for as much as a third of its supplies. read more

Shell wins injunction, Greenpeace looks at options

When an oil company with billions of dollars employs an army of lawyers to undermine your right to peaceful protest and free speech, then you know you’re doing something right.

April 6th 2:56 pm | Jim Paulin

Shell has won an injunction requiring Greenpeace to keep its distance, 1,000 meters from oil rigs and 500 meters from support boats nationwide, and now the Coast Guard is making a more modest proposal for a 25-yard “safety zone” restricting movements around the oil vessels in Dutch Harbor.

A Greenpeace spokesman would not rule anything out.

“Greenpeace does not discuss what we might or might not do in the future. What we can say is that we’ll continue to oppose Shell’s plans to drill in the Arctic peacefully and passionately because we believe that this project could spark an Arctic oil rush which will damage both the climate and the pristine environment,” said spokesman James Turner. read more

Of the 390 senior executives interviewed for the study, sixty-three percent stated that they had experienced some form of corruption, while forty-five percent stated that their company had forgone business opportunities in a particular market, environment or sector because that area was feared to be corrupted. read more

Shell Supports Iran’s Murderous Mullahs. Should We Be Supporting Shell?

The callous greed in the oil patch seems to know no limits. This to the cold dismissal of the brave Iranians who rose en-masse in 2009 to rally for free elections only to be put down brutally by the Mullah’s goon squads financed in large measure by the plenitude of oil revenues streaming from Iran’s export oil loadings. The world was outraged, but helplessly stood by as the slaughter continued. From far and wide came calls to impose sanctions on Iran and to impose embargoes on Iran’s products. One would have thought any responsible organization would have desisted its activities with what had now evolved into a murderous regime. read more
