Conservationists attack Shell over oil drill plans

Petroleum giant Shell plans to drill for oil 50 kilometres from the national heritage listed Ningaloo Reef.

ALI MOORE, PRESENTER: Petroleum giant Shell is on a collision course with conservationists over a plan to drill for oil 50 kilometres from Ningaloo Reef, a national heritage listed area.

The industry says it’s safe, but critics argue it puts wildlife and irreplaceable coral reefs at serious risk.

Minsi Chung reports from Perth.

MINSI CHUNG, REPORTER: Ningaloo Reef is recognised as one of the state’s major tourism drawcards and is on the waiting list for world heritage status. Now Shell wants federal environmental approval to drill an exploration well. If it gets the go ahead, work could start as early as September. read more

The threats related to our publication of relevant pages from “A History of Royal Dutch Shell”, focused on the Nazi past of the oil giant. The question of our continued mortality was raised.

A Shell insider asked if we were aware that “there is one country in the world that Shell will not do business with?”

This was a reference to Israel. The insider explained events that had led them to ponder the question in our headline.

Unrest has reached Oman, the usually “sedate” and “tranquil” Sultanate on the southeastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. Inspired by uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and Bahrain, Omani youth took to the streets to challenge government corruption, cronyism, unemployment and a lack of democracy. Protests spread across the desert country, with police firing bullets and teargas from helicopters, killing at least six demonstrators. Shell to scrap bonus link to sustainability index

AMSTERDAM, March 7 (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell said it would not tie executives' bonuses in 2011 to a benchmark index after its expulsion from that index over its Nigerian operations scuppered its 2010 sustainability-linked bonuses.
