The big banner, imitating thick oozing oil, hung from the façade of Shell Headquarters in the Hague, Netherlands. It read: “Shell, let’s go clean Nigeria!”, and was put up by activists on January 26, 2011 – the date the Dutch parliament scheduled a hearing to examine what Amnesty International and environmental groups alleged was the extremely hazardous environmental practices of the company. Shell simply denied the accusations, and went as far as declining to pay the rather small $100 million dollars a Nigeria court slapped on it as compensation for victims. read more

Shell gets gas pipe go-ahead

OUTGOING Energy Minister Pat Carey has given oil company Shell the go-ahead to build the final section of the Corrib Gas pipeline.

Mr Carey signed an order allowing Shell to begin construction of the final section of the pipeline on Friday, election day, and also approved changes to the project.

A foreshore licence needed to complete the regulatory process and allow work to begin is still needed from the Department of the Environment. It is unlikely to be granted before the next Government takes office on March 9. read more
