When Shell first entered the U.S. in the early years of the 20th Century, the company was labeled “The Yellow Peril”. History repeats.

Summary

Environmentalists blocked Shell’s drilling plans for the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. Shell had overcome the many obstacles last spring but the MC-252 incident in the Gulf of Mexico resulted in suspension of all offshore activity including the Arctic. Shell paid $2.1 billion for leases in the region and other expenses made the total come to $3.5 billion. This time the company has been denied clean air permits. Shell had planned to use the Frontier Discoverer rig with emission control technology. read more

Extraordinary letter from Shell whistleblower Dr John Huong

Because my stand on this matter in consonant with Shell Group Business Principles, its governance and with Malaysian national interests in mind, I made my concerns known internally at Shell. Shell made me feel that I had sinned for having a moral compass and a conscience.

My name is Dr John Huong. Until May 2003 I was a Shell geologist for almost 30 years – a management level employee of Shell Malaysia. I specialised in many areas of earth sciences including Micropalaeontology, Petrology, Sedimentology, Field Geology, Bio-Sequence Stratigraphy, Operation Geology, Exploration Geology, Reservoir Geology and Production Geology.  I am also conversant with Petrophysics, Petroleum Engineering (i.e. Well Engineering, Reservoir Engineering) and Petroleum Economics.  In the company, I belonged to the Malaysian Senior Staff Council (MSSC) and was once its Vice President. read more

Shell to face hearings on Nigeria work

Published: Jan. 5, 2011 at 7:49 AM

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Jan. 5 (UPI) — Dutch lawmakers said they would call Royal Dutch Shell officials in for questioning after conducting a visit to the oil-rich Niger Delta region.

Royal Dutch Shell is under fire for its operations in Nigeria as oil rebels ramp up activity following the collapse of a November cease-fire. The summons follows a brief fact-finding mission to Nigeria by several members of the Dutch Parliament, London’s Telegraph newspaper reports. read more

Royal Dutch Shell management accused of a ‘con-artist mentality’

By John Donovan

EXTRACTS FROM THE WISE WORDS OF SHELL WHISTLEBLOWER DR JOHN HUONG PROHIBITED BY THE MALAYSIAN COURTS FROM PUBLICATION ON THIS WEBSITE

When I started with Shell all those years ago I was proud to be an employee of what I considered to be nothing less than the best company in the world; an internationally respected brand and an equally highly respected management. It is a matter of the deepest regret to me that the company has sunk so law with its management acquiring global notoriety for participating in a disgraceful scandal which ranks alongside the likes of Enron and WorldCom. read more

Shell to be grilled over Nigerian oil tensions

Royal Dutch Shell will be questioned by politicians over its operations in Nigeria – two months after tensions over oil exploration in the region flared up again.

Dutch lawmakers have arranged a hearing, described as a “fact-finding session”, after several MPs travelled to the troubled Niger Delta region.

A ceasefire between militants opposed to foreign oil exploration and the government broke down in November.

Pipeline bombings caused output to fall 40pc in Africa’s top oil producer until a ceasefire in July 2009. However, this collapsed when 13 hostages were taken from Afren and ExxonMobil’s oil installations this autumn.

Nigeria’s army, navy and air force launched a large offensive six weeks ago, storming rebel camps and jailing insurgents. read more

BP’s price gushes on Royal Dutch Shell bid hopes

In deepwater: BP’s shares are still way below the 655p level hit before the Gulf of Mexico disaster

By Tamsin Brown
Last updated at 12:28 AM on 5th January 2011

Almost £5billion was added to the market value of BP as investors flocked to the stock on hopes of a takeover.

Shares in the oil giant gushed up 27.35p or 5.88 per cent to 492.90p, putting them at a six month high and helping to push the FTSE 100 through the 6,000 level.

The big rise came after the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday that rival Royal Dutch Shell (23.50p higher at 2162p) had mulled an opportunistic takeover bid for BP during the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and could still make a bid if another suitor emerged. read more
