Wounded BP ripe for merger or outright takeover?

Takeover of BP Fraught with Too Much Incalculable Liability Risk

BP’s tragic blunder in the Gulf and overall selloff in global equities have investors in the international oil giant seeing red, with shares of BP plunging 25% since April 20 and recent speculation the company is ripe for merger or outright takeover creeping into Wall Street circles.

Others say, however, the longer the oil continues to gush out the shattered wellhead the less likely any company would have an interest in the wounded BP. read more

Mega Merger: Shell would love to get hold of BP’s hydrocarbon reserves

Posting By Wilt Staph

“BP’s name is now so politically compromised that only the bravest company would want to take them over,” James Batty, Editor of Energy Intelligence Finance, an oil industry newsletter, said.

———————————————————————————–
Complete and utter nonsense! Any takeover would acquire tangible assets which are of huge value. There would be no need to perpetuate the BP brand name at all if the acquirer didn’t want to do this. Shell is certainly looking at making a bid with their eyes firmly on the upstream. If they got all the BP assets at a bargain price they would rapidly dispose of the BP branded refining and marketing sectors. Shell would love to get hold of BP’s hydrocarbon reserves and some of their high-earning properties.

BP Shares Plunge 13% on ‘Top-Kill’ Failure

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

June 1, 2010, 9:53 AM GMT?

By Steve Goldstein, London bureau chief for WSJ.com’s MarketWatch

BP’s failed attempt at pouring thousands of barrels of mud to plug the worst oil spill in U.S. waters sent shares of the London-listed oil giant down by 13% in early trade Tuesday.

Tuesday’s decline alone wipes £10.6 billion ($15.4 billion) off BP’s market capitalization, and the stock has lost over a third of its value since the Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20. [Read BP’s latest response to the disaster here.] read more

Shell says gas pipe will meet safety codes

The Irish Times – Tuesday, June 1, 2010

LORNA SIGGINS Western Correspondent

SHELL EP Ireland says it believes its new plan for the Corrib gas onshore pipeline meets or exceeds all “relevant” international and national codes and standards.

The nearest occupied house will now be 234m (767ft) away from the pipeline – more than three times the original distance, the developers state.

The developer’s proposal to construct a tunnel for the pipeline under Sruwaddaccon bay “will have the least environmental impact” on the estuary, which is a special area of conservation, Shell EP Ireland managing director Terry Nolan has said. read more

BP Ripe for Takeover? Not Really, Analysts Say

CNBC.com

Published: Tuesday, 1 Jun 2010 | 2:27 AM ET By: Barbara Stcherbatcheff Writer, CNBC

BP’s stock price has plummeted 25 per cent since the explosion of an oil well on April 20th, leaving some analysts to wonder whether the British energy giant is vulnerable to a corporate takeover.

But others say that the perspective of a mega-merger involving BP is getting farther, not closer, as oil keeps gushing out the ruptured well.

The New York Times wrote last week that Royal Dutch Shell and Exxon Mobil “are almost certainly running the numbers” to see whether a merger makes sense. read more
