The board has suggested that Shell E&P Ireland and its Corrib gas partners explore another route, up the Sruwaddacon estuary, and has given the company three months to come back with detailed information on the route, design and safety of the high pressure pipe. In a four page letter issued today, the board says that the current application "does not present a complete, transparent and adequate demonstration" that the high pressure pipeline "does not pose an unacceptable risk to the public".

An Bord Pleanálas decision on the modified route for the onshore gas pipeline is due to be delivered this week. A resumed court hearing will also take place this week in relation to the contempt of court ruling against Shell, issued in early September, in relation to the Rossport commonage.

In June, the company agreed to pay $15.5 million to settle a lawsuit that alleged complicity in murder, torture and other human rights abuses by Nigeria's former military government. In 1995, the Nigerian activist Ken Saro-Wiwawas was hanged by Nigeria's military regime after protesting Shell's environmental practices, including gas flaring and the destruction of mangroves to make way for pipelines.
