Shell To Sea Press Release – 6th May 09 – Removal of fences at Glengad
Saturday 9th May at 6pm will see Shells illegal fences at Glengad removed by the local community. Shell have been building their compound, which has not been passed through the planning process by Mayo County Council [1], for almost two weeks. There have been numerous protests, and the local community are now calling for help from around the country in safeguarding their homes and livelihoods, and in fighting the giveaway of Irelands natural resources.
Recent weeks have seen a increasing amount peaceful protest, and a ramping-up of intimidation from Shell mercenaries, most notably in the brutal assault on Willie Corduff. Local anger was only exacerbated by the negative response of Ministers Ryan and O Cuiv to concerns raised during a community meeting in Inver Community Hall last Thursday.

ROSSPORT farmer Willie Corduff’s 20-hour protest under a truck at Shell Ireland’s Corrib gas pipeline landfall site at Glengad last month was terminated by a strange and unexplained series of events portrayed by the Gardai and media as a paramilitary assault. But the reports from the same sources simply don’t add up.
One of the famous Rossport five jailed for almost four months, Corduff had recently been involved in direct mediation talks with Shell brokered by Ministers Eamon O Cuiv and Eamon Ryan. These talks broke down early last month and it was no secret that Shell was delighted having hated the idea that two Cabinet members would elevate the status of a community Shell’s spin doctors have tried to pillory. Before the ink was dry or an attempt was made to re-engage, energy minister Eamon Ryan signed off on an environmental management plan which appeared to permit Shell to resume work on its pipeline landfall site at Glengad.
Garda public order units drafted in ahead of Corrib gas protest
It has been alleged that at about 3.40am, he came out from under the truck to stretch his legs and was removed from the site by force by masked men. Gardaí at the time confirmed Mr Corduff had been removed by security guards employed by Shell. A Garda statement said he had then been hospitalised as a precaution.
