Michiel Brandjes, Company Secretary at Royal Dutch Shell, to examine alternatives to UK system of corporate governance at international summit

Shell’s company secretary will present his thoughts on the current variety of worldwide systems of corporate governance at Ethical Corporation’s Corporate Governance Summit.

30 March 2009, London

Mr Brandjes will participate in a discussion with David Frick, senior VP at Nestle, and BP’s Helen Ashton, Head of International Governance and Ethics on the best system of corporate governance for business.

Recent research by Ethical Corporation has shown that the UK system of corporate governance is viewed as globally pre-eminent, but the debate will be looking at the issue through the lens of the recent financial crisis. Can it be said that the UK system is as strong as previously thought?

This debate will take place at the Corporate Governance Summit, taking place on the 16th and 17th of June in London. Mr Brandjes, Mr Frick and Ms Ashton will be joined by corporate governance experts from a variety of businesses and institutions.

Lord Leon Brittan, ex-UK Home Secretary and current Non-Executive Director of Unilever will be examining the role of non-executive directors along with AnneMarie Durbin, Company Secretary at Standard Chartered Bank, and Miles Templeman, Director General of the Institute of Directors.

David Jackson, Company Secretary of BP, will be joined by Bob Evans of the UK’s Serious Fraud Office and Stephen Haddrill, Director General of the Association of British Insurers in a keynote presentation on whether the UK system of corporate governance is fit for purpose, and what changes are likely in the wake of the financial crisis.
