BP and Royal Dutch Shell will this week report massive third-quarter profits totalling nearly £9 billion, angering motorists who are still paying high prices at the petrol pumps.
BP, Europe’s second-biggest oil company after Shell, is on Tuesday expected to report profits of £4.2 billion for the three months to the end of September – a stunning 130 per cent jump on the same period last year.
Shell is set to report a 48 per cent rise on its third quarter last year to £4.6 billion two days later.
Oil cartel cuts output but price still falls
Many of the cuts will also hit energy groups working in Opec countries, including ExxonMobil and Chevron of the US, and Total, Royal Dutch Shell, Eni and Statoil of Europe.
Oil multinationals in “Renewable Energy” – it makes no sense.
We continue to be deluged with corporate advertising claiming that the multinational oil companies are in the vanguard in promoting the benefits of renewable energy. The latest ads from BP, the beyond petroleum company, are a case in point. They say that a combination of Oil+Gas+Wind+Solar+Biofuels will give the world a dependable energy future. True of course, although they conveniently miss out nuclear power presumably because there is certainly no chance that BP will go nuclear.
Rapid fall in oil prices brings majors to their pain threshold
The omens are not good. TNK-BP, the Anglo-Russian joint venture, has already indicated a potential $1 billion (£630 million) cutback in capital spending next year, and others are expected to follow suit.

How Green Is the U.S. Supreme Court?
And, finally, Burlington Northern v. U.S., No. 07-1601, consolidated with Shell Oil v. U.S., No. 07-1607, also has potentially wide ramifications, all contend. The Court faces questions about the standards for apportioning liability among parties for Superfund site cleanups and for imposing so-called "arranger" liability under the same law.

Shell’s greenwash sleight of hand
Shell's sleight of hand was to use the much-abused word "sustainability" to imply a green agenda when what it was really on about was keeping a sustainable flow of fuel out of its forecourt pumps. The ASA cried foul.
From boom to glut
If sustained, the lower price level will have further repercussions. Big producers such as Russia and Venezuela will struggle to exert political influence through energy policy. Resource nationalism, where oil-rich governments impose tougher terms on independent companies and notably in the case of Shell in Russia force them to cede control of assets, may soon be a spent force.

Time is ripe for greater public control of the oil industry in Europe
But, as we have seen, the pursuit of personal reward by top executives, driven by a pursuit of profit above everything else, can lead to disaster as it has in the banking sector and as it did for Enron and very nearly for Shell as well at the time of its reserves crisis a few years ago.
