Donation Will Support 2008 Hurricane Relief Efforts

WASHINGTON — Shell and Motiva announced a $1 million donation to the Red Cross to support the organization’s large and lengthy hurricane relief efforts in Texas and Louisiana. The Red Cross is continuing to provide lifesaving assistance to tens of thousands of Gulf Coast residents affected by the recent hurricanes, Gustav and Ike.

“The Red Cross relies on the generous support of companies like Shell and Motiva, to meet the needs of those affected by this year’s storms,” said Gail McGovern, President and CEO of the American Red Cross. “This has been an active year of disasters, which has depleted the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. We are grateful for this gift, which will help provide disaster relief to residents throughout Texas and Louisiana.”

“Shell and Motiva are committed to supporting the communities where our employees live and work and we understand firsthand the urgent need for assistance in this region.” said Marvin Odum, President of Shell Oil Company.

Red Cross disaster workers from every state have helped the millions of people affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. As of September 22, nine days after Ike’s landfall, more than 800,000 homes and buildings are still without power. The Red Cross is continuing to provide shelter, food and counseling to residents throughout the Gulf Coast. Red Cross mobile feeding vehicles are distributing meals throughout affected areas that are deemed safe.

Red Cross case workers stand ready to work with individuals and families to provide additional assistance based on the damage sustained to their homes, and are providing emotional care and comfort to help residents and emergency workers manage the stress and fear that accompanies all disasters. The organization will continue to mobilize volunteers and supplies, such as clean-up kits, to areas as needed.
