MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) – A plaque bearing the name of Oleg Mitvol has been removed from the door of his office at the Russian environmental watchdog, the out-of-favor deputy head of Rosprirodnadzor told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

Mitvol said the deputy natural resources minister, Semyon Levi, signed an order Tuesday on his dismissal due to personnel cuts, but failed to hand him the document.

Mitvol said the document was signed in the absence of Minister Yury Trutnev, who on Tuesday told journalists in Irkutsk that he hoped the conflict between Mitvol and his boss, Vladimir Kirillov, would be resolved. read more

With Hurricane Ike on the horizon, energy companies in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico are bringing employees onshore again and preparing to halt production just days after they began restaffing following Hurricane Gustav.

Crude-oil and natural-gas producers were in the middle of restoring operations after Gustav, which forced the shut-in of virtually all output before the hurricane made landfall Sept. 1 just southwest of New Orleans.

Oil-output volumes stayed flat on Monday compared with the previous day, with about 20% of U.S. Gulf output restored, according to the U.S. Minerals Management Service. Gas output continued growing, though, with 36% of capacity back on line. read more

Sarah Palin is not such a small-town girl after all

Palin quickly realised that Alaska had the potential to become a much bigger player in global energy politics, a conviction that grew as the price of oil rose. Alaska had been in hock to oil companies since major production began in the mid-1970s. As with most poor, distant places that suddenly receive great natural-resource wealth, the first generation of politicians were mesmerised by the magnificence of the crumbs falling from the table. Palin was the first of the next generation to realise that Alaska should have a place at that table.

Russian roulette is a risky game to play, but the rewards can be huge
