Windfall tax urged as profits soar to £68bn

Phillip Inman
The Guardian, Monday April 28 2008

The world’s big oil firms, including BP and Shell, are expected to announce a jump in profits of more than a quarter this week. BP’s profits are expected to soar by more than 40% and Shell’s by around 15% as the rocketing price of oil boosts their finances for the past three months.

Together, the two firms are expected to see their profits reach £68bn this year.

Protesters are expected to claim that the firms are profiteering and should face a windfall tax to channel some of the surplus back into public services. read more

Britain faces six weeks of record petrol price rises in the wake of the Grangemouth oil refinery strike, trade experts have warned.

Officials are expecting to announce the 15th straight day of increases in the average pump prices for petrol and diesel across the UK.

The run started because of the threat of closure of the Grangemouth refinery in Scotland, a consumer research group said, but the impact of the disruption of oil supply will continue to be felt across the UK into June as it heads towards a predicted mark of £1.50 a litre of petrol in some areas. read more

The strike at ExxonMobil’s Nigeria affiliate entered its fourth day Sunday with the shutdown of nearly all of the company’s 800,000 barrels per day output. Gilbert da Costa in Abuja reports talks to resolve the dispute have been constrained by pre-conditions set by the company and union.

Mobil Producing Nigeria, a unit of U.S. oil giant ExxonMobil, says the workers should call off the strike to facilitate the resumption of negotiations. read more

Irish Times: New location urged for Corrib refinery

27/04/2008  17:51

Residents of Rossport in Co Mayo have called on Shell E&P to consider a new initiative aimed at resolving the dispute over the location of the Corrib gas refinery.

In a statement issued today, residents urged Shell E&P to consider relocating the Corrib refinery to a more remote and coastal location, which they claimed would resolve all of the problems surrounding the Bellanaboy site in one move.

Three of the men who signed today’s statement were jailed in 2005 as part of the ‘Rossport Five’ group who had strongly opposed the original route of the pipeline.

Rossport residents said today that their stance has “never been anti-gas, but our priority has always been health, safety and the environment, and this remains the case”.

By Benoit Faucon
Last update: 9:56 a.m. EDT April 27, 2008

LONDON (MarketWatch) — The U.S. Department of Justice is looking at allegations of corruption by a Halliburton Co. unit in relation to the management of Nigeria’s EA oil platform project, a regulatory filing says.

The probe into Kellogg Brown & Root, which was spun off last year from Halliburton, was known to target its contract to build the Nigeria LNG Ltd. project. But in a quarterly report filed to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, U.S. contracting giant Halliburton says the government “has evidence of payments to Nigerian officials by another agent in connection with a separate KBR-managed project in Nigeria called the Shell EA project.” read more

Unidentified gunmen have killed five policemen and seized several weapons in a raid on a police station in the oil-rich southern Nigerian state of Rivers.

The attack took place early on Sunday on Bonny Island, the site of one of Nigeria’s largest oil and gas export terminals, spokeswoman Ireju Barasua said.

It was not immediately clear who had carried out the assault on the Bonny Divisional Police Station. Rivers state has witnessed a surge in attacks in recent weeks by a rebel group seeking greater autonomy for the oil-producing region, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND). read more
