Analysis: Shell pipeline fires continue

United Press International: Analysis: Shell pipeline fires continue

Published: April 3, 2008 at 1:34 PM
By CARMEN GENTILE
UPI Energy Correspondent

Two fires have ignited in recent days along Royal Dutch Shell pipelines in the oil-rich Niger Delta, prompting speculation militant groups were behind the incidents.

Although a Shell spokesman said the cause of the fire had yet to be determined, it was noted that two fires last year along the same pipeline “were caused by sabotage.”

Militant and criminal groups are often blamed for illegally tapping into pipelines in the delta and stealing oil and gas for personal use and resale on the black market. A chronic electricity shortage in energy-rich Nigeria has forced many to rely on generator power. Those who can’t afford to pay premium prices for fuel often turn to the black market for sharply discounted gas. read more

GM, Honda Fuel-Cell Plans Frustrated by Hydrogen-Station Delay

Bloomberg: GM, Honda Fuel-Cell Plans Frustrated by Hydrogen-Station Delay

By Alan Ohnsman

April 3 (Bloomberg) — General Motors Corp. and Honda Motor Co. said delays by energy companies in adding hydrogen stations in California threaten to hold back the market for cars powered by the clean fuel.

California said last week that the six biggest automakers must sell 7,500 hydrogen fuel-cell and battery-electric cars between 2012 and 2014 under a program to push “zero-emission vehicle technology.” The state lacks a complementary regulation requiring fuel companies to open hydrogen stations, said Larry Burns, GM’s vice president of research and development. read more

We think energy giant ExxonMobil’s (XOM; recent price, 85) size gives it advantageous economies of scale, and its strong earnings have enabled it to build a cash balance of $34 billion, exceeding its total debt of $17 billion (including our estimate of $7.3 billion for the present value of its operating leases), as of Dec. 31, 2007. read more

Broadwater Energy project: Scandal Ends Project’s Life (or Not)

THE NEW YORK TIMES: Scandal Ends Project’s Life (or Not)

By PETER APPLEBOME
Published: April 3, 2008

The law of unintended consequences invariably plays out in its own capricious ways, but here’s another that would have been impossible to predict. Could the fate of one of the most bitterly opposed development proposals in the history of Long Island Sound depend on former Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s unexpected exit from the ranks of the employed?

That’s increasingly part of the speculation as New York State inches toward an April 11 deadline that could decide the future of the Broadwater Energy project, the proposal to build a 1,215-foot-long, 100-foot-tall energy barge in the Long Island Sound to process liquefied natural gas and pipe a billion cubic feet of gas a day through a 22-mile pipeline along the floor of the Sound. read more

By Angela Macdonald-Smith

April 3 (Bloomberg) — Australian spending on offshore oil and gas exploration jumped 70 percent last year to a record because of spiraling costs and equipment shortages, the national petroleum industry lobby group said.

Investment in the hunt for oil and gas in waters around Australia surged to A$2.14 billion ($2 billion), the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association said today in an e-mail. Spending including onshore drilling rose by about A$1 billion to A$2.66 billion even as the number of wells fell. read more

Imperial Energy has greater oil reserves than any other independent company – that is, excluding Royal Dutch Shell, BP and BG Group – listed in London.

Its proven and probable reserves are 920m barrels of oil equivalent. Including the possible reserves that are believed to be present at its fields in the Tomsk region of western Siberia, the figure is 3.4bn boe. As the scale of its success in finding oil has become apparent its shares have soared, to a peak at the beginning of the year of £18.60. read more
