BBC News: Police raid BP offices in Russia

BBC News image

The TNK-BP joint venture was formed in 2003

Russian police have raided the Moscow offices of the oil giant BP and its joint venture TNK-BP.

The searches have renewed fears that the Russian government wants greater control of foreign-owned energy assets.

There is market speculation that the Kremlin would like the state-owned gas firm Gazprom to buy the stakes of BP’s Russian partners in TNK-BP.

Last year, TNK-BP was forced to sell its stake in the Kovykta gas field at a discount price to Gazprom. read more

Outgoing Shell President John Hofmeister

Posted by Keith Johnson

Why is one of Big Oil’s biggest cheerleaders still so optimistic when his industry is increasingly under fire thanks to high oil and gasoline prices, even higher oil profits, and rabid consumers?

John Hofmeister, who will step down as head of Shell Oil U.S. in June after three years at the helm, thinks there may eventually be a silver lining to the current pain at the pump and the black eyes the industry’s received in recent years. read more

Comment received from former Shell exec, Paddy Briggs

John

I am travelling at the moment and only fitfully in Email contact – hence this  public posting. Just to place on record that I support your initiative to bring to Shell’s attention concerns about anonymous abusive postings.

In my writings on Shell I have always tried to differentiate opinions and facts. I am also not a whistle blower and have never disclosed material facts nor data gained during my career.

I have some evidence that Shell has tried to interfere with my freedoms in recent times but at this stage this is speculation and I make no charges. read more

channelregister.co.uk: Shell says still ‘undecided’ on massive offshoring plan

Outsourcing document full of ifs

Royal Dutch Shell left both staff and potential suppliers on tenterhooks yesterday when it dished out details of its outsourcing programme to UK-based IT workers.

As we reported in January, suppliers in the frame for the deal include EDS, AT&T and T-systems, all of whom have been in talks with Shell over the past few months.

However, although the Anglo-Dutch firm goes into some detail in the document about what workers can expect to happen when the company offshores some or all of its IT infrastructure to a supplier, or suppliers, it remains vague on numbers and dates, and indeed on how much of its operation it actually intends to outsource. read more

BEHAVING WITH INTEGRITY

Integrity is one of our three core values and a cornerstone of our Business Principles. We translate this value into action with a clear and simple policy: zero tolerance for bribes and fraud.

To help us follow this policy, employees are provided with online and face-to-face training in key areas, including bribery and corruption.

We also train staff to help them understand what the Code of Conduct requires of them. In the first half of 2007, we rolled-out mandatory online training across the company, to help employees put our Business Principles into practice. We have a global helpline and website for staff and business partners to report concerns confidentially and get advice on
any suspected infringements of the law or our Business Principles. read more

STATEMENT BY ROYAL DUTCH SHELL PLC: LEGAL PROCEEDINGS: Groundwater contamination

(Source Page 157 of Shell 2007 Annual Report)

Groundwater contamination

Shell Oil Company (including subsidiaries and affiliates, referred to collectively as SOC), along with numerous other defendants, have been sued by public and quasi-public water purveyors, as well as governmental entities, alleging responsibility for groundwater contamination caused by releases of gasoline-containing oxygenate additives. Most of these suits assert various theories of liability, including product liability, and seek to recover actual damages, including clean-up costs. Some assert claims for punitive damages. As of December 31, 2007, there were 79 such suits pending against SOC and many other defendants (including major energy and refining companies). 72 of those matters have been consolidated for pre-trial proceedings in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York and seven are pending in other state and federal courts. read more

Myself and Other More Important Matters
By Charles Handy
(Amacom, 213 pages, $25)

Charles Handy is one of the world’s most unusual creatures — a very British management guru. If the average management thinker seems like the kind of person who yearns to spend time in anonymous lecture rooms giving PowerPoint presentations on the “five forces” and “seven paradigm shifts,” Mr. Handy, now 75, seems more comfortable at home reclining in his favorite leather armchair. He is more interested in meditating on Aristotle’s concept of “happiness” — eudaimonia — than in recycling the latest thinking about “optimizing organizational core competencies.” read more

Financial Times: What’s wrong with the right entrepreneurs

By Luke Johnson
Published: March 19 2008 02:00 | Last updated: March 19 2008 02:00

I enjoy what I do partly because I like working with entrepreneurs. They tend to be inspirational, energetic individuals, fizzing with ideas and optimism. But like most of us, they have their flaws. If you want to succeed in backing them, it pays to look out for the drawbacks and come up with solutions to compensate.

Entrepreneurs often have low boredom thresholds and are weak at the day-to-day micromanagement that every business needs. Mostly these visionaries focus on the big picture – they find administration dull. The wise founder hires a detail person, someone who enjoys process and paperwork, to clear up after them and keep the systems ticking over – be it finance, legal or technical matters. Frequently, business owners have extraordinary passion about their enterprise, and can carry a team to hell and back with their persistence. But that charisma and audacity may well be accompanied by an ability to overlook tedious but vital subjects such as bank covenants, contractual obligations and cash generation. That is where the reliable partner comes in, taking care of the housekeeping, and preventing the chaos that can overwhelm so many creative personalities. read more

Fort Mill Times (South Carolina): Oil and fishing industries hold forum on Bristol Bay drilling

By JEANNETTE J. LEE
(Published March 18, 2008)

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — A public relations campaign is escalating between Royal Dutch Shell PLC and groups who oppose the company’s plans to drill exploratory wells in Bristol Bay, home to the world’s largest sockeye salmon fishery.

Shell was the main sponsor of a public forum on Tuesday aimed to encourage collaboration between the fishing and oil industries, company officials said. Several of the panels focused on how oil rigs and fishing trawlers could theoretically coexist in the Bering Sea. read more
