Daily Mirror: Blaze at huge gas terminal

29/02/2008

Fire crews last night fought a blaze at one of the largest gas terminal complexes in the UK.

The fire in a treatment plant at the Shell base in Bacton, Norfolk, broke out shortly before 6pm.

It took 10 crews from Norfolk Fire Service around two hours to bring it under control.

Anna Hollis, from a nearby holiday park, said: “We could see flames and smoke shooting up and the alarm was going off.

“The fire was right in the centre of the terminal and there were helicopters flying all around.”

Patricia Myles, whose garden overlooks the site, said: “First we heard a bang and then all I could see was black smoke.”

The terminal, operated by several firms, houses gas processing plants and the system feeding gas between the UK and Europe.

Dail Mirror: Gas plant crippled by blast

29/02/2008

A huge blaze at one of Britain’s biggest import terminals nearly cut off a tenth of the country’s gas supply last night.

Engineers had to switch to a storage site for back-up when a blast crippled the plant.

Locals told how they feared terrorists had struck at the Shell terminal in Bacton, Norfolk, around tea time.

Caravan park owner Richard Hollis, 31, said: “I heard a big bang and the house shook.

“I went outside and saw smoke everywhere and then huge flames. It sounded like a bomb.”

Firefighter got the blaze under control after an hour and 45 minutes and shut it down safely. There were no injuries.

The plant, which processes gas from North Sea platforms and Europe, was still closed last night.
