Armed militants kidnapped seven oil workers, including one Briton, in the Niger Delta at the weekend, in the first major rebel assault on Nigeria’s oil installations since an uneasy truce was brokered five months ago by the new president, Umaru Yar’Adua.

Gunmen in 30 high-powered boats attacked a supply vessel servicing Shell’s offshore EA field which had been closed last year after a similar incident.

Shell security sources said the men – four Nigerians, one Croat, one Russian and one Briton – were taken along with their vessel after a three-hour gunfight with Nigerian troops. One person was reported injured. Other workers aboard the rig were evacuated. read more

· Output peaked in 2006 and will fall 7% a year
· Decline in gas, coal and uranium also predicted

Monday October 22, 2007

World oil production has already peaked and will fall by half as soon as 2030, according to a report which also warns that extreme shortages of fossil fuels will lead to wars and social breakdown.

The German-based Energy Watch Group will release its study in London today saying that global oil production peaked in 2006 – much earlier than most experts had expected. The report, which predicts that production will now fall by 7% a year, comes after oil prices set new records almost every day last week, on Friday hitting more than $90 (£44) a barrel. read more

Briton abducted from oil rig

Armed rebels seized a Briton, a Croat, a Russian and four Nigerians from an oil platform, owned by Shell, off Nigeria. With crude prices reaching new highs, markets remain jittery over continuing abductions for the ransom of workers, amid a conflict about the distribution of oil revenue.

PC Advisor: Interview: BT predicts the future of computing: Futurologist says AI entity will win the Nobel price

October 20, 2007
By Peter Moon

You might not believe a word he says, but BT does. Ian Pearson has been BT’s futurologist since 1991. His job it to imagine where today’s technologies will lead us. Artificial intelligence, genetic modification, intelligent viruses, imaginary civilisations and Second Life 10.0, as well as some pretty nasty scenarios involving robots like the Terminator are all real possibilities he included in his Technology Timeline.

In this interview, Pearson talks about his profession, explains why he doesn’t think we will understand intelligent machines when they finally arise, and warns to the big ethical dilemmas our technological civilization will have to face sooner or later. read more

MARKET WATCH
NATHALIE THOMAS

A number of market heavyweights are reporting this week, with BP, Royal Dutch Shell and GlaxoSmithKline among the highlights.

Although oil prices have been running at record highs since the middle of September, both BP and Shell are expected to report a drop in profits.

On Tuesday analysts expect BP to unveil underlying post-tax third quarter profits of $3.96bn (£1.93bn), a decrease of around 30% compared with last year.

The profits dive has been expected for a while by the City after chief executive Tony Hayward, who took over from Lord Browne when he resigned in May, described the group’s operating performance as “dreadful” to BP staff in September. read more
