BUENOS AIRES, Sept 8 (Reuters) – The Argentine government could allow Royal Dutch Shell’s sole refinery in Latin America to reopen next week if it approves a clean-up plan the company is expected to present in the coming days, a government official said on Saturday.

The government ordered the closure of Shell’s Dock Sud refinery, which refines 100,000 barrels per day and is a key provider of diesel fuel in Argentina, on Wednesday, saying it was an environmental hazard. read more

The Independent on Sunday: Shell could take nuclear option to mine oil from Canadian tar sands

By Tim Webb
Published: 09 September 2007

Shell is considering using nuclear power to operate its controversial tar sands programme in Canada.

Tar sands extraction – mining oil from a mixture of sand or clay, water and very heavy crude oil – uses a huge amount of energy and water. Environmentalists say it results in more than three times as many emissions of carbon dioxide compared to conventional oil production.

Now Canadian firms AECL and Energy Alberta have proposed building a nuclear reactor near the site of Shell’s vast Athabasca tar sands development. The boss of Energy Alberta has said the C$6bn (£2.8bn) reactor has the backing of a large unnamed copany that would take 70 per cent of the reactor’s energy. read more

Shell, especially, looks to be on the front foot – it recently signed co-operation agreements with Russia’s Rosneft and PetroChina.

A possible merger between BP and Shell, an idea raised by former BP boss Lord Browne, is said to be off the agenda by his successor, Tony Hayward. For now, that is. read more

Sunday Telegraph: Online revolutionaries

Revolutions used to happen in the streets – these days they take place online. And the targets are more often big businesses than bad governments. Banks, in particular, are feeling the brunt of grassroots internet campaigns.

HSBC has just been forced into a U-turn over graduate overdrafts after the National Union of Students campaign used Facebook to generate a massive protest. The HSBC incident followed hot on the heels of a widespread revolt against the high charges levied for bounced cheques and un-authorised overdrafts. The advice site MoneySavingExpert.com became a focus for the protest, with more than 4m copies of a template letter threatening banks with legal action downloaded from the site. read more
