The Sultan of Brunei, once the world’s richest man, has taken a former newsreader 32 years his junior as his second wife, reports said yesterday.

Family members and close friends were the only people to attend the wedding of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 58, and his 26-year-old bride, Azrinaz Mazhar Hakim, in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, the New Straits Times said.

Azrinaz was educated in Malaysia and worked as a television reporter and newsreader until leaving her station three months ago, saying she wanted to “venture into other undertakings”. read more

ROYAL DUTCH SHELL’S TARNISHED ROYAL PREFIX

ShellNews.net: ROYAL DUTCH SHELL’S TARNISHED ROYAL PREFIX

Monday 22 August 2005: 09.15 EDT

By Alfred Donovan

My son John recently received his first letter from Royal Dutch Shell Plc. It proudly displays the royal crown of the Dutch royal family. The oil giant bears the Royal prefix because Royal Dutch has enjoyed a strong link with the Dutch royal family for over a hundred years.

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands granted a royal charter to a small oil exploration company founded in 1890 by Jean Kessler, along with Henri Deterding and Hugo Loudon, which evolved into the Royal Dutch Petroleum Company. Queen Wilhelmina was a very shrewd investor and became the wealthiest woman in the world. At one time, the Dutch royals apparently owned as much as 25% of the oil company. read more

“Environmentalists and energy companies don’t often make good bedfellows…”

Calgary — Environmentalists and energy companies don’t often make good bedfellows, particularly in Alberta and especially when they’ve long butted heads over access to a valuable swath of Rocky Mountain wilderness. What a difference a study makes.

Roger Creasey, manager of ecosystem management at Shell Canada Ltd., sounds positively granola-loving when he talks about the future of a 1,000-square-kilometre piece of backcountry known as the Castle Carbondale region, tucked in the southwest corner of the province. read more

Shell and BG to swap key North Sea gas assets

The Business: Shell and BG to swap key North Sea gas assets

“The news shows that last month’s deal to exchange a 25% stake in Shell’s $20bn (£11bn, E16.4bn) Sakhalin Liquefied Natural Gas project for 50% in a vast Western Siberian field is just the first in a stream of swap agreements being negotiated by the firm as it desperately manoeuvres to make up for a shortage of oil reserves compared with its peers.”

FRESH TROUBLE BREWS IN RIVERS, NIGERIA’s OIL STATE, OVER SHELL

PHXNews: FRESH TROUBLE BREWS IN RIVERS, NIGERIA’s OIL STATE, OVER SHELL

“Nobody this time around can stop us. Enough is enough. I don’t think it is our place to be begging oil companies to live up to their social responsibility. Shell is simply wicked…”

AKANIMO SAMPSON BUREAU CHIEF, PORT HARCOURT

FRESH communal problem is currently brewing at Bille, in Degema Local Government Area of Nigeria’s Rivers State, where the community youths are locked in confrontation with Shell, a transnational oil and gas supermajor.

Bille youths recently shut down Shell flowstations in the area, claiming that the community has no tangible development project to show for the over four decades of the oil giants’ operations in their territory. This time around, they are alleging that the oil company was no longer enthusiastic about the “agreement” they reached with them on the socio-economic development of Bille. read more

Shell Reopens Oil Facilities in Nigeria

FORBES/Associated Press: Shell Reopens Oil Facilities in Nigeria

Monday 22 August 2005

Royal Dutch Shell PLC has reopened two oil facilities producing nearly 40,000 barrels of crude a day after closing them last week amid a compensation dispute, a company spokeswoman said Monday. A lawyer said talks to resolve the dispute would resume.

Villagers demanding compensation for an oil spill and a fire nearly two years ago launched protests in mid-August that prompted Shell to close the facilities in the oil-rich Niger delta’s Obio-Akpor district.

Bernadette Cunnane, a Shell spokeswoman, said by telephone from London that the Agbada I flow station producing 14,000 barrels a day reopened Sunday while the Agbada II station, which produces 25,000 barrels daily, reopened early Monday. read more

Shell declines comment on reported asset swap with BG

FORBES/AFX News Limited: Shell declines comment on reported asset swap with BG

Monday 22 August 2005

LONDON (AFX) – The Royal Dutch Shell PLC has declined to comment on a weekend report claiming it is considering a North Sea asset swap arrangement with BG Group PLC.

‘We have no comment on that,’ said a Shell spokeswoman.

According to an unsourced article carried by the Business newspaper, Shell and BG are in advanced discussions to exchange certain gas producing fields in the North Sea.

BG is looking at handing Shell some of its 22 pct stake in the giant Buzzard field, the largest UK gas find in a decade, in exchange for a share of Shell’s interest in the Ormen Lange field. read more
