Daily Telegraph: More sounds from Shell

Mr van der Veer believes “it is important to allow people to contribute to Shell in their own way, while the leadership helps them to focus their energies on what matters”.

City diary

Following my revelation that Clive Mather, head of Shell Canada, will be the special guest at an Evangelical Alliance evening on valuing trust, here’s another executive who wants a word in your Shell-like.

For just £142 you can hear Jeroen van der Veer, chairman of Royal Dutch/Shell, speaking at the Energy Institute’s autumn lunch. According to the blurb, Mr van der Veer believes “it is important to allow people to contribute to Shell in their own way, while the leadership helps them to focus their energies on what matters”. read more

Guardian: Corporate battle lines

Guardian: Corporate battle lines

“The collapse of Enron, and the related and unrelated stories of corporate fraud, unbridled greed and negligent auditing”: “How different are the skills required to succeed in, say, Shell, from those needed in the Treasury? (Apart, of course, from the need in the former case to cultivate a blind eye.)

The Economics of Innocent Fraud: Truth for Our Time

by JK Galbraith

Reviewed by Howard Davies

Guardian Weekly

It is some time since we have heard from JK Galbraith, which is not entirely surprising. At 95 he may be excused some gaps in what has, for 75 years, been a regular flow of stimulating political and economic writing. The general assumption, I think, was that he had finally retired from the fray. The Economics of Innocent Fraud shows that is far from the case. He has re-emerged with a pungent, if short, essay on economics, corporate politics and the terminology of public discourse. read more

Instant messaging used in ‘untraceable’ City leaks

Financial Times: Instant messaging used in ‘untraceable’ City leaks

“follows a string of cases where e-mails have provided crucial evidence, such as when Royal Dutch/Shell disclosed e-mails showing the feud between two of its directors over its overstatement of reserves.”

By Bob Sherwood, Legal Correspondent

Published: August 20 2004

City professionals are increasingly using untraceable electronic instant messaging systems to communicate sensitive information secretly, computer experts have warned.

Many workers at financial institutions have woken up to the dangers of sending improper communications by e-mail after so many “smoking gun” messages have been exposed in recent years.

Instead, they are turning to Microsoft’s MSN Messenger and other real-time “instant messaging” systems to send information that their employers cannot detect, according to Kroll Ontrack, part of the global risk consultancy. read more

MarketWatch: Oil minister says Shell, Exxon Mobil out of Venezuela gas project

Posted Saturday 20 August 2005

CARACAS (MarketWatch) — Venezuela’s oil minister said Friday that Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil Corp. will no longer participate in the Mariscal Sucre natural gas project.

Venezuela will begin to develop the project’s initial two fields on its own, Rafael Ramirez told reporters.

Venezuela had been in talks with the two companies for the Mariscal Sucre project but had reached no agreement. The minister said the government will use its own resources to launch the project. read more

Sunny days for an alternative power play

The Independent: Sunny days for an alternative power play

“As with wind power, some very well known companies are interested in solar power – Shell, BP and Sharp, for example, all have operations – while smaller companies are specialising on niches of the sector.”

Funds to get you into alternative energy

Published: 20 August 2005

There’s a simple explanation for the seemingly ever-upwards march of the oil price: while demand for black gold keeps rising, supply is failing to keep pace.

Political uncertainty and setbacks at various refineries around the world may be behind this month’s increases to a record-breaking $67 (£37) a barrel – analysts think the price could even hit $70 before 2006 – but in the long run, as oil supplies dwindle, there is little prospect of sustained price falls. read more

Ireland On-Line: Shell ‘committed to ending pipeline dispute’

Posted Saturday 20 August 2005

Energy giant Shell today offered to look at any initiative that could secure the release of the five Mayo men jailed over their protests against a gas pipeline.

After a meeting between Shell bosses and Mayo County Council chiefs, the company insisted it was committed to finding a resolution to the crisis.

The men, known as the Rossport Five, have been locked up in Cloverhill Prison for seven and a half weeks over their protests against the onshore pipeline designed to bring gas from the Corrib field to a refinery. read more

Irish Times: Shell and councillors in talks over gas pipeline impasse

“While Shell had “taken significant steps to create an atmosphere in which the men could see the merit of dialogue and are pleased that they have agreed to pursue this path”, Mr Pyle said the company had to “preserve” its “legal position in relation to the authorised construction of the onshore pipeline and the protection of our staff from unlawful interference”.

Shell E&P Ireland says it is working with Mayo County Council’s cathaoirleach, Fine Gael councillor Henry Kenny, to seek a solution to the current impasse over the Corrib gas project.

The cathaoirleach and Fine Gael’s whip, Cllr Paddy McGuinness, intend to meet the five Mayo men in Cloverhill Prison, Dublin, next Wednesday, to try and secure their release. The men, who are opposed to the pipeline on health and safety grounds, have now spent 52 days in prison. read more

Share buybacks create an illusion of gain

THE TIMES (UK): PERSONAL INVESTOR: Share buybacks create an illusion of gain

“Royal Dutch Shell is mounting a £5 billion buyback by way of apology for management lapses. Something must be thrown to the vultures; shareholder’s money is an obvious choice.”

COUNTRYWIDE, the estate agency chain, achieved a notable stock market triumph when it reported its first-half results. Income was down a fifth and pre-tax profit collapsed from £30.7 million to £3.5 million. The interim dividend was carved from 4.5p to 1p. Yet Countrywide shares stayed firm above 300p, a level implying a complete recovery in the housing market.

The only potentially positive surprise was that Countrywide promised to spend cash saved on the dividend to buy shares back from institutional investors. The board explained that the shares are now owned mostly by Americans, who prefer buybacks to dividends, which suffer withholding tax. UK fund managers, who have notoriously little grasp of risk, did not care either way. So the change was made. read more

Shell takes next step in oil shale testing project

The Billings Gazette (Montana): Shell takes next step in oil shale testing project

Saturday 20 August 2005

MEEKER, Colo. (AP) – Shell Oil is preparing the next phase of its multimillion-dollar effort to see if oil shale production is viable enough to crank up a large commercial facility.

Shell has received approval from Rio Blanco County, state and federal officials to conduct a $50 million, two- to four-year study of a groundwater freezing process, company spokeswoman Jill Davis said Thursday.

“We’re still looking to decide if we’ll move on to commercial production by the end of the decade,” she said. “It’s been promising, so we want to take it to the next level with an environmental test of our ‘freeze wall’ process.” read more
