Emigrant Online (Ireland): No move on Shell dispute

“The latest protest in support of the Rossport Five took place in Galway on Saturday when an estimated 1,000 people marched through the city to attend a rally at Spanish Arch.”

On Monday Shell announced that it would dismantle almost three kilometres of pipeline which it had welded together before receiving ministerial consent. Later the company announced plans to lay off a further 128 workers now that work on the Corrib gas pipeline has come to a halt. The redundancies are in addition to 91 workers already laid off in recent weeks

The five Mayo men jailed for their refusal to obey a High Court order not to obstruct the construction of the controversial pipeline remain in prison, with no end to the impasse in sight. Their relatives and supporters converged on Castlebar when the issue was due to be discussed by Mayo County Council. On the advice of council officials, the elected councillors voted 13-9 to reject a motion urging Shell to locate the gas terminal offshore. Legal advisors suggested that, had the motion been passed, the local authority could have found itself involved in costly legal action. The deputy county manager also said the passing of such a motion would make it difficult to attract further investment to the county. read more

Daily Telegraph: Go on, fill ‘er up – it’ll boost your pension

Daily Telegraph: Go on, fill ‘er up – it’ll boost your pension

“Shell, for example, is spending $15 billion a year looking for more black stuff (or for methane, which is almost as valuable) yet it is still returning capital to the company’s owners. It argues, sensibly enough, that it’s already exploiting every worthwhile project it can find, and that it’s not a bank. If it needs capital in a year or five, the market will provide it, provided investors can be confident that the profits won’t be confiscated.”

Do your eyes water as you pour ever larger sums into your petrol tank? Do you alternately curse the Chancellor for taxing it, and the oil companies for making such vast profits at your expense?

Calm down, dear, it’s only the iron law of supply and demand. Besides, petrol isn’t really that expensive. Adjusted for inflation, it’s been 90p a litre before – several times, in fact, in 2000, 1986, 1981 and 1974 to be exact. Since then, your income will almost certainly have gone up faster than inflation (since incomes always do, except in times of recession) and the car you drive will have become more frugal, unless, of course, you have traded up to a bigger model. read more

Cnooc Stock Arcs to New High

THE WALL STREET JOURNAL: Cnooc Stock Arcs to New High

“Four years ago, the Australian government blocked an effort by Shell to take control of Woodside on grounds it wasn’t in the national interest and limited Shell to a 34% stake. Analysts assume a takeover by Cnooc would run into similar obstacles.” Lack of Unocal Strain Cheers Investors, but Old Problems Linger

BEIJING — Its attempt to purchase Unocal has failed and its expansion strategy appears stuck.

So why is Cnooc performing so well on the stock market?

The share price of China’s No. 3 oil and natural gas producer touched an all-time high last week, closing Friday at HK$6.05 (78 U.S. cents) on the Hong Kong stock exchange. The stock has been buoyed by soaring crude-oil prices and by the removal of uncertainty surrounding Cnooc’s $18.5 billion bid for Unocal, analysts say. Cnooc withdrew the bid this month amid fierce opposition in the U.S. Congress, paving the way for rival bidder Chevron to acquire the El Segundo, California, oil company. read more

Rossport Five call on Shell to lift pipeline injunction

Ireland On-Line: Rossport Five call on Shell to lift pipeline injunction

“The five Co Mayo men jailed for obstructing work on the controversial Corrib gas pipeline have reiterated their call on the global oil giant Shell to lift the injunction it has secured against them.”

15 August 2005

The five Co Mayo men jailed for obstructing work on the controversial Corrib gas pipeline have reiterated their call on the global oil giant Shell to lift the injunction it has secured against them.

The men were jailed seven weeks ago for refusing to obey the injunction ordering them not to interfere with work on the pipeline that is due to be laid on their land.

In an open letter today, they said they wanted to accept Shell’s offer of talks on the issue and called on the company to lift the injunction so they can leave prison and attend those talks. read more
