“Shell has decided to challenge a US$130 million (euro104.8 million) claim for unpaid taxes in Venezuela, and the tax agency has said Shell will lose out if the case goes to court.”:

Venezuela’s tax agency has ordered a two-day closing of Royal Dutch Shell PLC’s office in the western city of Maracaibo amid a tax audit, the company said.

The company’s oil production in Venezuela has not been affected, as only around 150 employees at the Maracaibo office have been affected by the move, company spokeswoman Bettina Steinhold said.

“Our main production platform is still working,” she said, adding that Shell’s offices in the capital of Caracas were still open. read more

Royal Dutch Shell will today meet representatives of a small number of shareholders who say they have been adversely affected by the recent unification of its British and Dutch parent companies.

On Wednesday, Shell announced it had acquired 98.8 per cent of the shares in Royal Dutch and was considering options to obtain the rest. These include “squeezing out” the remaining shareholders, or further restructuring the now defunct Royal Dutch entity to deal with the problem. read more

The wife of a Mayo man jailed for protesting against a controversial gas pipeline today failed to secure the County Council’s support for their campaign.

Despite Mary Corduff’s pleas over the safety of the 70km line in a four and a half hour debate, councillors voted against a motion calling on energy giant Shell to refine the gas at sea.

Mrs Corduff said her family should not have to go through any more torture over the contentious route of the Corrib gas field through their farmland near Rossport. read more

Supporters of the five men jailed for contempt of court after opposing the Shell gas pipeline in Co. Mayo have taken their campaign for justice to Derry.

The Shell to Sea Network slammed the Irish Government for its position in the case at a public meeting in The Junction, Bishop Street last night. Several dozen people attended the meeting that was hosted by the Social Environmental Alliance.

It followed a fundraiser in the city for the five men, dubbed the Rossport Five, who have now been in jail in the Republic for six weeks. read more
