A Public challenge to Irish Shell Boss Andy Pyle

By John Donovan

On Thursday I was a guest on Eamon Dunphy’s Breakfast Radio Show (on Dublin Radio Newstalk106.fm) for a discussion about the Shell Corrib pipeline controversy and the imprisonment of the “Rossport 5”. A transcript of my contribution to the debate, when I was asked to substantiate my prediction that Shell would engage in undercover activity can be accessed via this link: Read the article

In fact, Shell has a track record of mounting spying operations against pressure groups protesting against its activities (MI6 ‘Firm’ Spied on Green Groups (Sunday Times archive article 17 June 2001). read more

“I am appalled that a court order has been granted when the grounds for doing so were themselves unlawful. By starting some aspects of work in Rossport prior to receiving the correct authorisation Shell have acted illegally.”

Locals thrown into jail over illegal oil pipeline in Northern Ireland. Five men from Rossport in County Mayo have been imprisoned since last June for protesting at the construction of the Corrib pipeline by Shell. The men were imprisoned after breaching a court injunction not to obstruct the construction of a pipeline. Shell have since been ordered to dismantle two miles of the pipeline, as it had been built without consent.

Caroline Lucas, Principal Speaker for the Green Party said, ‘I am appalled that a court order has been granted when the grounds for doing so were themselves unlawful. By starting some aspects of work in Rossport prior to receiving the correct authorisation Shell have acted illegally. read more

Irish Examiner: Oireachtas to debate Shell crisis if men purge contempt

“But despite the offer, the Rossport Five again indicated yesterday that they would not enter any negotiations until Shell drops the injunction against them.”

By Michael O’Farrell, Political Reporter

THE Oireachtas Communications Committee is to hold urgent hearings on the Corrib gas saga, provided the five men jailed as a result of the dispute purge their contempt.

Committee chairman Noel O’Flynn said the matter was an important one which deserved “urgent priority”. read more

“The company’s managing director Andy Pyle said: “We strongly feel that the only way we’re going to get a way through this is to have a period of calm – certainly more calm than there is at the moment – when we can have a proper dialogue and a proper discussion of the issues.”

Five men jailed for their protests against the construction of a controversial gas pipeline in Co Mayo will remain in prison despite oil giant Shell’s announcement it was suspending work on the project, it emerged today.

The five men were jailed more than five weeks ago for refusing to abide by a High Court order preventing them for obstructing the construction of Shell’s high pressure pipeline from the Corrib gas field to an onshore refinery.

Shell last night announced it was deferring all work on the laying of a 75km offshore pipeline to allow discussion on the future of the €900m project. read more

“DUBLIN: Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell said it was suspending operations on the ($1.1 billion) Corrib gas project until the end of the year to allow time for a safety review and to resolve the dispute with residents.”

Saturday 6 August 2005

DUBLIN: Oil giant Royal Dutch Shell said it was suspending operations on the ($1.1 billion) Corrib gas project until the end of the year to allow time for a safety review and to resolve the dispute with residents.

“While we strongly believe that all safety aspects of the onshore pipeline have been fully addressed, we want the public to have confidence that every reasonable step has been taken,” Shell Ireland Managing Director Andy Pyle said in a statement.

Ireland’s natural resources minister has offered to appoint an intermediary to broker talks between the oil giant and residents in western Ireland who oppose its plans for an onshore gas pipeline. read more

Irish Examiner: Rossport Five – Shell must lift injunction on jailed men

“Shell can facilitate their release simply by going to court and having the injunction lifted, a measure advised by Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte more than a fortnight ago but which the company chose to ignore.”

Saturday 6 August 2005

The decision by Shell E&P to delay its offshore pipeline until next year is a sensible move, but it fell short if its objective was to allow for a period of discussion and dialogue.

That will not happen as long as the so-called Rossport Five remain in Cloverhill prison for refusing to purge their contempt of a High Court order.

That was made quite clear by Dr Mark Garavan, spokesman for the men and for the Shell to Sea campaign, after a meeting with them yesterday.

The injunction taken out by the company remains extant and as long as it does the five intend to remain in prison. read more

“Dr Mark Garavan, spokesman for the men and the Shell to Sea campaign, said if no injunction was in place it would create a legal context for progress and the possible release of the five.”

Saturday Aug 06, 2005

THE five men jailed for over five weeks due to their opposition to the onshore Corrib gas pipeline have called on Shell E&P Ireland (SEPIL) to stand down the injunction they obtained in the High Court preventing anyone from interfering with their construction activities in the Rossport area of north Mayo.

Irish Times: Dempsey fails to break Shell pipeline impasse

“Minister for Marine Noel Dempsey’s latest attempt to break the impasse over the Corrib gas field appears to have collapsed, with a refusal by Shell E&P Ireland to lift its court injunction against north Mayo residents opposed to the onshore pipeline.”

Lorna Siggins, Marine Correspondent

Minister for Marine Noel Dempsey’s latest attempt to break the impasse over the Corrib gas field appears to have collapsed, with a refusal by Shell E&P Ireland to lift its court injunction against north Mayo residents opposed to the onshore pipeline.

A new offer by the Minister to appoint an intermediary to work between the residents and Shell was accepted yesterday by both sides, but the five men in prison said they could not deal with a mediator while still in jail as this would effectively render them as “hostages”. read more

The upwardly mobile Finn

Financial Times: The upwardly mobile Finn

“Now established as one of the world’s most feted business executives, Mr Ollila is poised for an entirely different challenge as non-executive chairman of oil giant Royal Dutch Shell, a company in the midst of its own corporate transformation from sister Anglo-Dutch companies to a single entity.”: “…his reputation as a stickler for corporate governance standards should help Shell put behind it last year’s scandal involving over-stating its reserves.”

It is one of those tantalising “what if” questions of recent corporate history.

Only three months before Jorma Ollila became chief executive of Nokia in January 1992, the Finnish banks that then controlled the company were in talks to sell the group to Ericsson, its great Swedish rival.

Ericsson walked away. The Swedes had their beady eye on the mobile telephony operation that Nokia had tucked away in its sprawling portfolio of businesses. But they were put off by Nokia’s heavily loss-making consumer electronics division. read more
