Ireland Online: Resign call to Minister over Shell protesters jailing

Posted Tuesday 5 July 2005

Supporters of the five men jailed over opposition to a gas pipeline being built across their Co Mayo lands today handed in a letter calling for the resignation of a minister.

The letter was delivered to the Galway office of Minister of State Frank Fahey demanding he leave his post at the Department of Justice, as hundreds held protests calling for the release of the men.

The campaigners have claimed Mr Fahey, as former Marine Minister, approved of the pipeline and the compulsory acquisition of lands by the oil companies along the route. read more

Irish Times: Memos show Shell talked of suing State

“Shell E&P Ireland discussed suing the State if the company failed to have opponents of the Corrib gas pipeline committed for contempt of court.”: “Mr Pyle “asked why not just have all of them committed”. His public relations manager Rosemary Steen “pointed out that from a public relations point of view this was not the best course of action”.

Lorna Siggins, Marine Correspondent

Shell E&P Ireland discussed suing the State if the company failed to have opponents of the Corrib gas pipeline committed for contempt of court.

This emerges from memos contained in an exhibit attached to an affidavit issued by Shell to five Mayo residents opposed to the pipeline before a court hearing last week.

The memos recording discussions between Shell and its lawyers on several dates in June also indicate that company chief executive Andy Pyle wanted to have all the obstructing landowners “committed” for contempt of court, but was advised against this from a “public relations point of view”. read more

Shell E&P Ireland has said it is “concerned” at the “level of misinformation and myths” circulated about the Corrib gas pipeline.

As protests continued in Mayo and Galway yesterday over the jailing last week of five north Mayo residents for contempt of court after they obstructed work on the pipeline, the company said it recognised that some people had concerns and had gone to “great lengths” to ensure that “accurate information is available” and to try and “correct some of the misperceptions that exist”. read more

In 1896, Svante Arrhenius, the Nobel Prize-winning chemist, predicted that burning fossil fuels would increase the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and cause global warming. The recent statement from national science academies around the world confirms Arrhenius’s broad conclusion. It also shows that emissions of CO2 are disturbing the delicate balance of factors (such as sea temperature, salinity, currents, ice sheets and solar radiation) that maintained an exceptionally stable, gently warming climate over 8,000 years while human beings achieved the astonishing transformation that we call modern civilisation. read more

Sibneft said yesterday it was recommending a record $2.29bn dividend for 2004, amid increasing signs that Roman Abramovich’s oil company may change hands.

Shares of Russia’s fifth-largest crude producer gained 2.2 per cent on news of the big pay-out. Sibneft had previously said it would pay no dividend before resolving efforts to reclaim 34.5 per cent of its shares held by the beleaguered Yukos oil group since their failed 2003 merger. read more

From Mr Alexander Trotter.

Sir, Sir Mark Moody-Stuart’s letter (June 30), questioning the independence of people offered trips to attend annual meetings, is pertinent and highlights his concerns about the corporate governance aspects of shareholders organising into “membership organisations”, with questioning being dominated by one such organisation. Obviously no comparison should be made between Friends of the Earth and those larger institutional investors that join together in order better to promote their interest as shareholders. read more

From Mr Neville Beale.

Sir, In your articles about the last annual meeting of Shell Transport and Trading, you report me as “a small . . . investor” asking which of the founders of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group in 1907 – Marcus Samuel and Henri Deterding – might be turning in his grave at the decisions just taken in London and The Hague (“Dutch uncles worry as oil group unites”, June 29).

However, I was also speaking as a former employee for some 30 years. read more

The Guardian: Shell and M&S plan trade aid for Africa

“Marks & Spencer and Shell are to form an unusual partnership aimed at reducing poverty in Africa by encouraging local commercial ventures.”

Terry Macalister

Tuesday July 5, 2005

Marks & Spencer and Shell are to form an unusual partnership aimed at reducing poverty in Africa by encouraging local commercial ventures.

The two companies are to cooperate in a supply chain strategy that will see the Shell Foundation – the charitable wing of the oil group – invest $1m (£570,000) in local flower and fruit growing enterprises.

Research by M&S released today shows that 60% of the public believe British business is not doing enough to help African nations with their wide-ranging problems. And 80% of those interviewed believe trade – as much as the aid issue highlighted by the Live 8 concerts at the weekend – offers the best way to fulfill Africa’s potential. read more

MOSCOW is agog with takeover rumours concerning Sibneft, the oil company controlled by Roman Abramovich, which yesterday announced a record £1.3 billion dividend payment to its shareholders.

The scale of the cash distribution, which is almost double the oil company’s profits in 2003, has prompted speculation that Sibneft’s owners are taking funds from the company ahead of a sale.

ShellNews.net Editor and a Shell shareholder

Sir

I am writing with regard to the letter from Sir Mark Moody-Stuart published by The Financial Times on 30 June 2005 under the headline: “Enjoy a free trip and get to ask Shell a question.”

In his letter Sir Mark questioned the independence of individuals who asked questions at his final AGM as a Shell Transport director. He also made reference to the “Alternative Shell Report” published by the Friends of the Earth. I note that Tony Juniper, Executive Director of the FOE subsequently confirmed that the FOE did not pay for the relevant individuals to travel to the AGM as Sir Mark had wrongly alleged. read more
