SHELL and Dutch energy group Nuon have gained government approval to build the Netherlands’ first offshore windfarm with a €200m ($246m) investment programme, writes Martyn Wingrove.

A 36 wind turbine project will be built, 10 km off the coast of Egmond aan Zee by joint venture NoordzeeWind and construction contractor Ballast Nedam.

Shell and Nuon will spend € 200m to install the wind turbines and subsea cables starting in the fourth quarter of this year and continuing into the autumn of 2006. read more

Repsol YPF SA signed an agreement with British private equity firm CVC Capital Partners Ltd. to bid around €2.5 billion ($3.05 billion) for Royal Dutch/Shell Group’s liquefied-petroleum-gas distribution and marketing business, a Repsol official said Thursday.

If the bid is accepted, Spanish company Repsol, the fifth-largest European oil company by market capitalization, would also become the world’s largest LPG distributor. read more

Media Week: WPP scoops Shell global media account

WPP’s MediaCom and Maxus have been selected to run the consolidated global media account for UK-based oil giant Shell, believed to be worth around £130m a year.

The pair will operate under the Group M umbrella but it is understood that MediaCom in London will ahead the account.

The win ends a lengthy pitch that ended the existing roster of agencies working on the account, including MediaCom in Europe, Maxus in Asia, Initiative, MindShare and JWT in the US and Starcom MediaVest for Shell’s Jiffy Lube brand. read more

Operations of Anglo Dutch oil giant, Shell, may be disrupted, as 13 of its host communities in the Niger Delta region have issued a stop work notice to the multinational oil company.

The action followed the abandonment of the proposed 42 kilometre Otuegila-Nembe road, which Shell promised them five years ago.

Chairman, Otuegila-Nembe Road Project Forum, Chief Damfebo K. Derri, said in a statement issued in the Bayelsa State capital, Yenagoa, that the stop work notice was informed by the antics and failed promises of Shell over the road project. read more

SHELL Australia’s decision to delay refinery overhauls in 2003 because of the war against Iraq has come back to haunt it as planned and unplanned outages last year all but wiped out profits at its refining and marketing business.

Coming at a time of strong petrol volumes last year on the back of its petrol discounting alliance with Coles Myer, the outages forced Shell to import product at a loss to cover demand.

Shell’s retail volumes jumped more than 30 per cent last year. read more
