LONDON — The Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies said Tuesday that it has appointed Citigroup and N M Rothschild as financial advisors to the Steering Committee, chaired by Lord Kerr, reviewing Shell ‘s structure and governance.

On June 17, 2004, Shell confirmed that the review, first announced on Mar. 5, 2004, included possible simplification of the management structures of the Boards and the Group; improvements to decision-making processes and accountability and enhancing effective leadership for the Group as a whole. read more

LONDON — The Royal Dutch/Shell Group of Companies said Tuesday that due to a change in accounting principle for inventories, previously reported net income for the first quarter is up by $226 million to $4.7 billion.

The schedule also includes updated quarterly production figures. As per the 2003 annual reports and accounts and 2003 Form 20-F, production figures were restated to eliminate certain cash paid royalties in Canada, with the effect reduction in production of 9 million barrels of oil equivalent in 2003, Shell said. read more

THE Motor Trades Association said yesterday the fuel link-ups between refineries and Australia’s two biggest grocers is forcing hundreds of service stations out of business and putting pressure on unaligned BP and Mobil.

MTA director Michael Delaney said he believed the Coles Myer-Shell and Woolworths-Caltex alliances will not be good for consumers in the long term if the industry becomes a duopoly.

Both joint ventures offer 4 a litre off the price of petrol if the customer has purchased goods worth $30 or more at the respective supermarkets. read more

SYDNEY: Australian petrol retailers have warned trading alliances linking supermarket giants Woolworths with Caltex and Coles Myer with Shell are creating a duopoly threatening the long-term future of other major oil companies in Australia.

Motor Trades Association director Michael Delaney said a price war sparked by the Woolworths-Caltex and Coles Myer-Shell alliances — where shoppers are offered significant petrol discounts as a reward for shopping at supermarkets — was squeezing the margins of Australia’s other oil refiners, BP and Mobil. read more

At a riverside hideout in Nigeria’s Niger Delta, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, a local militia commander, stands near three large barrels and describes how his armed gang takes oil from pipelines, refines it and sells it cheaply to the local people.

Hundreds of barrels of crude at a time are siphoned by members of his militia. Asked if he considers this theft, Mr Dokubo-Asari replies that he is reclaiming for the people what belongs to them. “As far as we are concerned, it’s the Nigerian state that is stealing oil,” he says. read more
