Itar-Tass.com: Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell considers inviting Gazprom into Sakhalin- 2 project

23.06.2004

MOSCOW, June 23 (Itar-Tass) – The Anglo-Dutch oil giant Shell considers inviting the Russian gas monopolist Gazprom into the Sakhalin-2 oil and gas development project, of which Shell is the operator, Shell Vice President Hans Van Lamoen said on Wednesday.

Hans Van Lamoen pointed out that Shell was ready to enter into cooperation with Gazprom. However, at present, it was impossible to say in what form and at what stage this will happen.

The deputy head of Gazprom’s governing board, Alexander Ryazanov, said for his part “Gazprom is interested in this project and talks with Shell are now underway.” read more

It was reported Monday that Shell Oil Co. has plans to reduce production at its Bakersfield refinery – just in time for California’s busiest summer vacation driving period.

Shell officials deny that any cutbacks are planned, which did not prevent several elected officials and consumer groups from suggesting Shell is slowing production in an effort to boost prices, and therefore profits.

There is another possible explanation for Shell considering a slowdown in production months before its announced date to close the Bakersfield refinery, and it also has to do with profits. Shell may need the extra cash to pay for a ghastly mistake made in southern states about a month ago. read more

A St. James Parish woman is suing Shell Oil and its Motiva Enterprises refinery in Baton Rouge federal court, claiming the high-sulfur gasoline she purchased at a Gonzales station damaged her car.

The class-action lawsuit is the first filed in the Baton Rouge area targeting defective fuel from the Norco refinery that suspended sales at 400 stations just before the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

In the lawsuit, Barbara Dorsey claims she filled her 2003 Nissan Altima with “the tainted Shell gasoline” purchased at the Shell Express One Stop, 2006 W. La. 30, Gonzales, several times in May. read more

The Guardian: Friends of the Earth says Shell fails own green pledge

Friends of the Earth, the environmental group, today accused oil giant Shell of failing to live up to its promise of environmental and social responsibility. Already under scrutiny for overstating its oil reserves, Shell came under attack from FoE for polluting communities and damaging wildlife habitats in a report released ahead of the company’s annual general meeting next week.

“In Texas, Durban, Manila and the Niger delta, communities have been offered endless dialogue, projects and pilot projects instead of the concrete action needed to stop the harm the refineries, depots, gas flares and pipelines are causing,” said Tony Juniper, the executive director of FoE, in the foreword of Behind the Shine. read more

Polluting Nigeria

Living on oil

The production of oil, discovered in the Niger Delta 40 years ago, is having a devastating affect on Nigeria’s largest wetland region. Families live among the oil fields, breathing in methane gas and coping with frequent oil leaks in Africa’s largest oil exporter. Oil giant Shell gets 10% of its oil from the Niger Delta and is failing to invest in its infrastructure to prevent pollution, says Friends of the Earth in a new report Behind the Shine.

Oil Giant Accused of Environmental ‘Abuse’

The Scotsman: Oil Giant Accused of Environmental ‘Abuse’

By Amanda Brown, Environment Correspondent, PA News

23 June 04

An international oil company was accused today of damaging wildlife habitats and polluting air quality and local communities by its activities.

Friends of the Earth attacked the Shell at a news conference in the House of Commons, alleging that the firm is causing misery for people through oil spills and gas flares which poison the land and air and contribute to global warming.

But the oil giant immediately hit back, saying that, in countries like Nigeria, corruption and bribery are a problem and many oil spills are caused by local people siphoning oil out of pipelines. read more

Friends of the Earth: Behind the Shine – the Real Impacts of Shell’s Work Around the World

Friends of the Earth: Behind the Shine – the Real Impacts of Shell’s Work Around the World

Jun 23 2004

The oil giant Shell, already under scrutiny for overstating its oil reserves, stands accused of polluting communities, damaging wildlife habitats and failing to live up to its promise of environmental and social responsibility in a new report launched by Friends of the Earth today (Wednesday 23 June), ahead of the company’s annual general meeting (AGM) [1].

Behind the Shine – the other Shell Report 2003 unveils a catalogue of misery from communities living next door to Shell’s operations around the world [2]. These people have known for many years what shareholders were shocked to discover this year – Shell`s promises and commitments are not all they seem [3]. Representatives from these communities are in London to raise these concerns at the company’s AGM.

In the Niger Delta, where Shell sources 10 per cent of its oil, the company’s failure to invest in technology results in 700 million scf/d of gas being burnt off into the environment, an increase on last year, despite a commitment to end flaring by 2008 [4]. Gas flaring wastes energy, contributes to global warming and pollutes the environment [5]. But gas flaring has become an every-day feature for the communities in the Delta. Oil spills are also common – with 9,900 barrels of oil spilt in 2003 [6]. Oil spills are frequently left rather than cleaned up, contaminating farmland, water courses and fish supplies. read more

SEC will not change rules on oil reserves

Financial Times: SEC will not change rules on oil reserves

Adrian Michaels in New York and Carola Hoyos in London

Jun 23, 2004

US regulators have for now ruled out changing their controversial rules on oil industry reserves amid fall-out from the Shell scandal and would prefer companies voluntarily to reveal more details.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s rules date back to the late 1970s with occasional guidance updates. The industry has criticised them for being vague and out of date.

Royal Dutch/Shell, Europe’s second largest listed energy group, revealed in January that it had incorrectly booked more than 4bn barrels, or 20 per cent, of its proven reserves with the SEC. Shell argues that the error was, in part, caused by unclear SEC rules. read more

THE YOUNG AND THE OLD

The Wall Street Journal: THE YOUNG AND THE OLD

23 June 04

THE YOUNG AND THE OLD: This year, executives at Shell’s Beijing branch waded through more than 6,000 resumes, interviewed several hundred finalists and will eventually hire nine college graduates from the class of 2004, The Wall Street Journal’s Leslie Chang reports.

Though China’s economy is growing at nearly 10% a year, many of the country’s 2.8 million graduates say they can’t find a job worthy of the money and time they put into their education and training. What’s more, rapidly expanding companies are forced to take sometimes extreme measures to find qualified bodies to fill new positions. “The paradox highlights one of the growing pains of China’s economy: a mismatch between the expectations of college graduates in an immature labor market and the demands of fast-growing companies.” read more

Cairn director buys £624,000 of company shares

The Independent: Cairn director buys £624,000 of company shares

By Saeed Shah

23 June 2004

The deputy chairman of Cairn Energy splashed out nearly £624,000 on shares in the company yesterday, following large share purchases by other company directors recently.

Analysts said the amount of personal wealth being put into Cairn shares by directors indicated that the company’s huge discoveries at a field in India could be even more promising than previously thought.

The directors have been buying even though the stock has already trebled in value since the find was made public in January. Cairn is currently in the process of drilling appraisal wells at its field in Rajasthan, which was bought from the troubled oil giant Shell for just £4m before the discoveries. Any more positive news that emerges on the field will add to Shell’s embarrassment over the sale. read more
