LONDON (Reuters) – Royal Dutch/Shell says it has inadvertently fed corruption, poverty and conflict in Nigeria through its oil activities, but says it is mending its ways.

“Government and local communities must take the lead in ending the conflict,” said Emmanuel Etomi, the oil giant’s sustainable community development manager for Nigeria, in an annual report on its social and environmental performance on Thursday.

“But as part of an industry inadvertently contributing to the problem, we are also determined to help.” read more

Bloomberg.com: Shell itself ‘Feeds’ Nigeria ‘violence’, May End Onshore Work

June 10 2004 (Bloomberg)

Royal Dutch/Shell Group, Europe’s second-biggest oil company, may have to quit onshore production in Nigeria, which supplies 9 percent of the company’s oil, because of escalating civil strife, according to a company-funded report.

Violence in the Niger River delta, home to a majority of Nigeria’s oil reserves, kills about 1,000 people a year, on par with conflicts in Chechnya and Colombia, according to the Shell- funded report that said rebels sell stolen oil to buy weapons. The 93-page survey also said Shell itself “feeds” the violence and may have to leave the area by 2009. read more

Merrill’s BP downgrade puts a brake on FTSE

The Times: Merrill’s BP downgrade puts a brake on FTSE

By Nick Hasell

10 June 2004

BP PROVED a drag on the FTSE 100 as a downgrade from its joint stockbroker left the oil major with one of the worst blue-chip performances.

Despite the setbacks last year which forced it to scale back its production forecasts, BP has been protected by the rally in the oil price to all-time highs, meaning its stock has outperformed the wider market over the last 12 months.

But in a heavyweight review of the European oil sector, Merrill Lynch suggests the shares have now run far enough. Mark Iannotti, analyst, points out that BP now trades at a 20 per cent premium to Royal Dutch Shell and France’s Total, making it the most highly-valued stock in the sector. read more

The Guardian: Calpers demands review at Shell

Jill Treanor

Thursday June 10, 2004

Calpers, America’s largest pension fund, with a reputation for instilling change in big companies, yesterday turned its fire on Shell by demanding a high level review of its boardroom structure.

The California public employee’s retirement scheme has put the embattled Anglo-Dutch oil group on its annual hit list of companies which need to boost performance.

The “focus list” is compiled after an analysis of the 1,600 or so stocks in which it invests and this year contains three other companies which have been facing wider questions about boardroom structure and share performance. They are Walt Disney, Emerson Electric and Maytag. read more

Due to higher marginal costs of soaring fuel prices in the world market, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp.’s full year net profits for this year may fall short of its P3-billion target.

At the sidelines of the launching of a new oil product, Shell country chairman Edgar Chua said on Tuesday night that as of end-May, the company achieved only 25 percent of its full-year target. “By this time, we should have been registering 41 percent to meet our target for 2004,” Chua said. read more

Shell Oil Says It Will Pay For Rental Cars, Towing Fees: Class-Action Lawsuit Seeks More Money For Drivers Stuck With Bad Gas

MIAMI, Fla. — Shell Oil says, it will pay towing fees and car rentals for drivers whose cars were damaged by a bad batch of their gasoline.

Last month, gasoline distributed to Shell, Texaco, and potentially other stations across Florida and Louisiana had excessive sulfur. The sulfur damaged gas gauges on thousands of vehicles, causing them to read “full” even when empty. read more

The main office of Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. could have been the original target of last Monday’s grenade attack in Makati City, police said yesterday.

Chief Superintendent Prospero Noble Jr., Southern Police District (SPD) director, said the Shell headquarters on Valero corner Villar street in Salcedo Village, Makati City was not attacked because of the heavy security outside its premises.

“Security personnel of the Shell office informed us that prior to the 3:40 a.m. attack at the Gercon Plaza along Makati Avenue, they saw a vehicle pass by the Shell building twice,” said. He added the guards jotted down the plate number and the SPD is currently tracking down the owner of the said vehicle. read more
