By OGJ editors

HOUSTON, June 4 — Scottish Power PLC unit PPM Energy Inc. and partner Shell WindEnergy Inc., Houston, dedicated the Colorado Green Wind Power project in Lamar, Colo. in mid-May. Construction began in December 2003 and the commissioning phase began in February.

Situated on more than 11,000 acres south of Lamar in southeastern Colorado, the wind farm—the fifth largest in the country—can deliver 162 Mw of power from 108 General Electric turbines. Prime customer Xcel RFP said that, compared with the current high cost of natural gas, the wind farm is expected to save its customers about $6 million/year. read more

While many students toy with the idea of starting their own business, it’s employees already working for organisations who are more likely to explore launching a start-up, according to a survey by Shell LiveWire. The funder, which supports business start-ups, says 45% of the enquiries it receives comes from employees, while the unemployed and those at college or university account for 22% and 19% respectively. Launching a manufacturing-led business accounted for only 10% of all enquiries, retail-led business accounted for 29%, whilst service-led businesses accounted for 61% of all enquiries. read more

‘Even those clowns at Shell’

The Independent: ‘Even those clowns at Shell’

5 June 04

(Extract from article)

I would have thought that at over $40 a barrel even those clowns at Shell should to be able to make some money. Indeed the increase in the price of the black stuff must far exceed the overstatement of reserves that Shell famously and disgracefully indulged in recently.

I see Shell is back around 400p or so, bouncing back from the 350p or so they bottomed out at in the immediate wake of the reserves scandal. Perhaps they have further to go. I won’t be adding to my holding just yet however, because I feel I need some time to have a bit more of a ponder about where the markets might go next in the current turmoil. Indeed as I write the price of crude is declining. All very well, of course, but what happens if the House of Saud finally loses its grip on its Kingdom? Then the fuel protesters would have something to cry about. I cannot help wondering how a war that was, in reality, fought for oil and to make capitalism safe from terrorism has brought us to such a pass. read more

Shell to pay $75,000 over oil spills

TheAge.com.au: Shell to pay $75,000 over oil spills

By Stathi Paxinos

June 5, 2004

Shell Australia must pay $75,000 towards an environmental project near its Geelong refinery after it was convicted in the Geelong Magistrates Court yesterday of polluting Corio Bay during three oil spills last year.

The amount is the largest penalty imposed on a company for a breach of the Environmental Protection Act.

Magistrate Ron Saines said the spills, in June, September and November, totalling 360 litres, were caused by Shell’s failure to adequately maintain its 800-metre pipeline jetty at Corio Bay, which tankers use to offload crude oil to the refinery. read more

Shell sells Egyptian gas holding

Financial Times: Shell sells Egyptian gas holding

By James Boxell

Published: June 5 2004 5:00 | Last Updated: June 5 2004 5:00

Royal Dutch/Shell has sold its 40 per cent stake in an offshore Egyptian gas field, as part of its strategy to “actively manage its portfolio” to the state-owned Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company.

The Anglo-Dutch energy group deemed the Rosetta Concession in the Nile Delta non-core because it was not the operator of the field, while there was limited potential for further exploration and few synergies with its other operations. BG Group, which operates the field, has a 40 per cent stake. James Boxell read more

Departing Shell Canada Ltd. president and chief executive officer Linda Cook says women don’t have to be born into power or privilege to exert influence on society, noting that women from all walks of life have made significant impacts on the world.

“Don’t forget that, for thousands of years, women have honed their skills as influencers without overt power. As wives and mothers we have cajoled and persuaded to great effect,” said Ms. Cook, above, in a keynote address to a Women of Influence luncheon of nearly 1,000 people. read more
