Shell, the embattled oil giant, faces a fresh blow this weekend as one of its most important gas projects, already billions over budget, falls into deepening crisis.

Fears are growing that its $12 billion (£6.7bn) development in Eastern Siberia could wipe out the last remaining Asian grey whales. Shell has conceded its pipeline will have to be dug deeper beneath the seabed than it had planned, threatening the endangered species’ habitat.

SHARES in oil firms are set to beat the market this year as political uncertainty and tight supply send fuel prices soaring.

 

Companies such as Shell and BP, which make up 11.7% of the FTSE All-Share index, performed poorly during 2003, rising just 8.7% against 20.9% for the index as a whole. They lagged the market despite growing demand in China, which pushed shares of other commodities up 37.6%.   read more

VIVIENNE COX has been quietly promoted to the “top table” at BP, cementing her position as one of Britain’s most powerful businesswomen.

The new role at the world’s second-largest oil group also makes Cox the most high- profile female in the industry.

Lord Browne, chief executive, last week told senior staff that Cox, currently group vice-president for integrated supply and trading, and Andy Inglis, group vice-president for exploration and production, would both be elevated to executive vice-president status from July.

The Independent: Watchdog shakes up oil audits in the wake of Shell scandal

The global accounting watchdog has launched an overhaul of the accounting rules for the oil and gas industry in the wake of the Shell reserves scandal.

Auditors could be forced to sign off oil companies’ reserves under the new rules being proposed by the IASB.

It is also expected that companies will have to make far more disclosures to back up their reserves statements as a result of the changes.
